- Wildfire smoke exposure and persistent respiratory symptoms and illness: a retrospective cohort study. [Journal Article]Respir Res. 2026 May 12. [Online ahead of print]RR
- CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to wildfire-dominated PM2.5 is associated with increased risk of respiratory illness and symptoms which persist for months beyond the acute wildfire period and may indicate risk of future chronic lung disease. Additional days of exposure to very unhealthy or hazardous range PM2.5 levels are associated with increased risk of ongoing respiratory morbidity and emergency healthcare utilization in the adult general population.

- CONCLUSIONS: This report presents the youngest documented DBA case of successful LTx for BOS complicated by ALS after allo-HSCT globally. It demonstrates that dynamic multimodal monitoring is crucial for early BOS detection. LTx is a viable therapy for end-stage pulmonary cGVHD in children. This case underscores the need for proactive monitoring in high-risk patients and provides a paradigm for managing this complex complication.

- Real-World Effectiveness of Universal Nirsevimab on Bronchiolitis Incidence: A Regional Hub-Spoke Surveillance Analysis in Liguria, Italy. [Multicenter Study]Pediatr Pulmonol. 2026 May; 61(5):e71653.PP
- CONCLUSIONS: The introduction of universal nirsevimab immunization in Liguria was associated with a marked reduction in RSV-related hospitalizations, confirming its strong real-world epidemiological impact. These findings support nirsevimab as an effective and feasible public health intervention to substantially reduce the burden of RSV bronchiolitis in infants.

- Acute and Chronic Cough in Children. [Review]Otolaryngol Clin North Am. 2026 May 04. [Online ahead of print]OC
- Cough is one of the most common symptoms among children. While most acute cough episodes are viral and resolve within 4 weeks, chronic cough persisting beyond 4 weeks warrants further evaluation. Pediatric-specific cough guidelines emphasizing algorithmic evaluation assist in early and accurate diagnosis for preventing long-term pulmonary complications. This article reviews evidence-based approac…

- Risk factors for progression to bronchitis or pneumonia in hospitalized children with human rhinovirus infection: a retrospective cohort study using machine learning. [Journal Article]Front Pediatr. 2026; 14:1787440.FP
- CONCLUSIONS: Bronchitis progression is primarily associated with airway obstruction, whereas pneumonia is linked to more complex clinical scenarios, including prior medication, co-infections, and coagulopathy. These findings can improve early risk stratification and guide targeted interventions.

- Predicting in-hospital mortality in a real-world population of ward-based non-invasive ventilation in acute COPD exacerbations. [Journal Article]Ther Adv Respir Dis. 2026 Jan-Dec; 20:17534666261441160.TA
- CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that the NIVO score shows promise as a predictive tool for in-hospital mortality in patients with AECOPD receiving ward-based NIV. Furthermore, it suggests that NIVO may be able to support decision-making for enhanced NIV delivery in new clinical pathways to address the growing burden of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbations.

- Acute chest syndrome (ACS) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in children with sickle cell disease (SCD) and is commonly precipitated by respiratory infections. Among viral triggers, influenza A is a recognized cause of severe ACS and may contribute to rapid clinical deterioration. We report a case of a nine-year-old girl with homozygous sickle cell disease (HbSS), with irreg…

- Nonlinear age-season dynamics and macrolide resistance of Mycoplasma pneumoniae: a large pediatric cohort study during the post-pandemic resurgence. [Journal Article]BMC Infect Dis. 2026 Apr 22. [Online ahead of print]BI
- CONCLUSIONS: MP-related risks in children show distinct nonlinear patterns, with a peak around 8 years of age and a predominant high-risk window extending from autumn through winter. Macrolide resistance was highly prevalent (71.4%-100%) in a clinically selected subgroup of refractory/severe cases, underscoring the urgent need for rapid molecular diagnostics and alternative treatment strategies. Although uncommon, PB represents a severe complication of MPP that requires timely bronchoscopic intervention.

- We aimed to assess whether Pelargonium sidoides extract (EPs®7630) reduces symptom duration or antibiotic use compared with usual care in adults with acute bronchitis. We conducted a pragmatic randomised-controlled trial across 36 primary care practices and five walk-in clinics in Switzerland. Adults (≥ 18 years) consulting a general practitioner for the first time for a new episode of acute bron…
