- Effect of Preoperative Systemic Steroids on Tissue Eosinophils in CRSwNP: Meta-Analysis. [Review]Laryngoscope. 2026 Apr 30. [Online ahead of print]L
- CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative systemic corticosteroids significantly reduce TEC in CRSwNP, regardless of the quantifying method. This effect may interfere with histologic assessment when biopsy is taken intraoperatively. To avoid misinterpretation, clinicians may consider either withholding preoperative systemic corticosteroids, using a less suppressive regimen, or obtaining a biopsy prior to steroid initiation.

- Primary Language Spoken at Home and Speech Outcomes Among Children With Cleft Palate. [Journal Article]Laryngoscope. 2026 Apr 30. [Online ahead of print]L
- CONCLUSIONS: Within a single urban practice in the United States, lower rates of hypernasality and revision surgery were observed among non-English and non-Spanish speaking patients. Such findings may suggest disparities in resources available for detecting speech abnormalities in this population.

- Occupational Variation in the Incidence of Laryngeal Cancer in the Nordic Countries. [Journal Article]Oncol Ther. 2026 Apr 30. [Online ahead of print]OT
- CONCLUSIONS: The study confirms a major variation in the incidence of LC between occupations. The findings underscore the importance of considering lifestyle factors typical of each occupation in cancer risk assessments and the potential benefits of targeted prevention efforts.

- "Getting to diagnosis was an absolute nightmare": survey insights about the lived experience of spinal CSF leak in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. [Journal Article]J Neurol. 2026 Apr 30; 273(5).JN
- CONCLUSIONS: The spinal CSF leak experience in Australia and NZ is comparable to reports from other high-income countries, highlighting the global need to increase awareness of spinal CSF leak, support timely diagnostic, referral and treatment pathways, and mitigate its impact on quality of life.

- Structural atlas of Pakpunavirus P7-1 reveals determinants of virion stability and genome ejection. [Journal Article]Commun Biol. 2026 Apr 30. [Online ahead of print]CB
- Bacteriophages of the Pakpunavirus genus exhibit a broad host range and potent bacteriolytic activity, making them promising candidates for clinical use. Here, we present a structural atlas of the therapeutic phage Pakpunavirus P7-1, a component of a phage cocktail targeting Pseudomonas aeruginosa that has undergone Phase 1/2 clinical trials. We determine the near-atomic structure of the extended…

- Deep-learning based quantitative evaluation of postoperative atelectasis following right upper lobectomy. [Journal Article]NPJ Digit Med. 2026 Apr 30. [Online ahead of print]ND
- Existing methods of grading atelectasis are typically subjective and not scalable. We aimed to develop an automated, deep learning-based framework to quantify and grade postoperative atelectasis. We retrospectively included all patients who underwent RULobectomy from 2008 to 2023. We trained three nnU-Net v2 segmentation models for preoperative and postoperative lobes and airways with volumetric …

- The effect of eccentric exercise-induced delayed onset neck muscle soreness on force steadiness and the spatial distribution of neck extensor muscle activity. [Journal Article]Sci Rep. 2026 Apr 30. [Online ahead of print]SR
- This study investigated the effects of eccentric exercise-induced delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) on neck extensor muscle behaviour and force output, examining force steadiness and the spatial distribution of splenius capitis (SCap) and upper trapezius (UT) muscle activity. Twenty healthy individuals completed three laboratory sessions (baseline, 24 h and 48 h post-exercise), where participa…

- Advances in Reconstructive Surgery for Gingivobuccal Cancers. [Review]Oral Maxillofac Surg Clin North Am. 2026 Apr 29. [Online ahead of print]OM
- Gingivobuccal defects are one of the most challenging defects for the reconstructive surgeon. Great strides have been made to improve the reconstructive outcomes and quality of life of the patient with a combination of more sophisticated surgical techniques and more advanced technology. New methods provide better accuracy, shorter surgical times, better functional results, lesser complication rat…

- A review of paediatric dog bite injuries presenting to plastic surgery services. [Journal Article]Surgeon. 2026 Apr 29. [Online ahead of print]S
- CONCLUSIONS: Dog bite injuries in children are highly morbid and preventable. In addition to legislation, mitigation of risk requires a multimodal, community-based approach that encompasses education of children, parents and dog owners.

- Non-surgical Management of Neoplastic and Inflammatory Conditions of the Airway. [Review]Otolaryngol Clin North Am. 2026 Apr 29. [Online ahead of print]OC
- Inflammatory and neoplastic conditions of the pediatric airway can result in significant respiratory and vocal impairment. The pediatric airway is inherently small; thus, even minor obstruction results in an exponential increase in resistance to airflow and can quickly lead to life-threatening airway compromise. The broad range of severity and symptom manifestation requires comprehensive history,…

- CONCLUSIONS: In this exploratory study of CT and MRI neck scans of the oropharynx, ChatGPT-4V demonstrated a mediocre performance for detecting OPSCC. Continued research and advancements in AI are essential to improve the reliability and clinical utility of LLMs for the interpretation of neck scans.

- Fifteen-minute consultation: The initial assessment of children with a suspected cervical spine injury. [Journal Article]Arch Dis Child Educ Pract Ed. 2026 Apr 30. [Online ahead of print]AD
- Cervical spine injury occurs in 1-2% of paediatric trauma cases. Differences in anatomy, size and injury patterns compared with adult patients can make the assessment of cervical spine injuries in children challenging. This article provides an overview of the approach to be taken when assessing a potential cervical spine injury. It also covers the range of available clinical decision aids to help…

- Association between pre-mortem chemotherapy exposure and reduced endothelial cell density in donor corneas. [Journal Article]Br J Ophthalmol. 2026 Apr 30. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Pre-mortem exposure to systemic chemotherapy was independently associated with reduced ECD in donor corneas. These findings identify systemic cancer treatment as an under-recognised determinant of donor endothelial health and may have implications for donor screening and graft allocation strategies.

- In 2011, a unilateral accessory C1 to C2 articular facet was described for the first time. We report an uncommon case of a right-sided accessory C1 to C2 articular facet causing cervical spinal cord compression. A 41-year-old man presented with neck pain radiating to the trapezius muscles for 8 months. Two months later, he developed impaired fine motor skills. Physical examination revealed tender…

- Deep Learning-Based Identification of Surgical Candidacy for Cervical Spinal Cord Decompression. [Journal Article]Int J Spine Surg. 2026 Apr 30. [Online ahead of print]IJ
- CONCLUSIONS: The present work describes a proof-of-concept model for triaging patients with cervical stenosis into surgical and nonsurgical cohorts based on imaging findings. In doing this, we aim to provide an additional supportive metric for referring providers to consult when considering whether to refer patients to spine surgery.
