- A 28-year-old man with HIV (diagnosed eight years prior, last CD4 count 23 cells/mm3) and prior tuberculosis (cured, then confirmedly reinfected with treatment default) presented with cachexia, diarrhea, chest pain, and tachypnea with increased work of breathing that required orotracheal intubation. Admission chest CT showed extensive bilateral consolidations with air bronchograms, suggestive of …

- Identifying populations with high prevalence of non-malarial febrile illnesses across different demographic groups in Malawi. [Journal Article]Malar J. 2026 Jul 17. [Online ahead of print]MJ
- CONCLUSIONS: PSC bear the highest burden of NMFIs and symptomatic malaria, while SAC commonly harbor asymptomatic malaria. Febrile illness management should move beyond malaria-focused approaches to include integrated screening for common non-malarial infections, particularly in young children.

- The impact of HIV coinfection on mpox patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis. [Systematic Review]Emerg Microbes Infect. 2026 Dec; 15(1):2706348.EM
- A substantial proportion of mpox cases occur in people with HIV, but how HIV coinfection and immune status affect clinical outcomes remains unclear. We systematically searched major databases up to March 2025 for observational studies comparing mpox patients with and without HIV coinfection. Pooled effect sizes were calculated using random-effects models. Risk ratios (RRs) or standardized mean di…

- Mixed intestinal protozoal infection masquerading as ulcerative colitis in advanced AIDS: a case report. [Case Reports]Front Med (Lausanne). 2026; 13:1895591.FM
- Co-infection with Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica) and Giardia lamblia (G. lamblia) is exceptionally rare reported in individuals with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), despite both protozoa being well-recognized etiologic agents of intestinal disease in the general population. The overlapping clinical manifestations of protozoal infections and inflammatory bowel disease may pose signific…

- Disseminated Histoplasmosis in a Patient With Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome: A Case Report and Literature Review. [Case Reports]Cureus. 2026 May; 18(5):e109985.C
- Histoplasmosis is an endemic mycosis in the central and eastern USA, Central and South America, parts of Asia, and Africa. It commonly presents as a pulmonary disease, but can involve multiple organ systems in immunocompromised individuals. In patients with HIV and low CD4 counts, usually <150 cells/μL, it can present with gastrointestinal symptoms, lymphadenopathy, and rarely as meningitis, or w…

- HIV and Diarrhea: Clinical Characteristics and Etiology at a High-Complexity Center in Southwest Colombia. [Journal Article]AIDS Res Treat. 2026; 2026:7874615.AR
- CONCLUSIONS: The predominant cause of diarrhea was infectious. Infectious etiology and persistent diarrhea were associated with higher viral loads and lower CD4 (+) T-cell counts, which may be linked to poorer clinical outcomes in HIV-infected patients. Further studies are required to better understand these relationships.

- Chronic noninfectious diarrhea remains a clinically important but often underrecognized complication in patients receiving long-term antiretroviral therapy (ART). Although modern human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) treatment has transformed survival, gastrointestinal adverse effects can impair adherence, quality of life, nutrition, social functioning, and tr…

- Fever of Unknown Origin as an Isolated Manifestation of Ulcerative Colitis Despite Clinical and Radiographic Remission: A Case Report. [Case Reports]Cureus. 2026 Jun; 18(6):e110918.C
- Fever is a recognized manifestation of active ulcerative colitis (UC); however, isolated fever in the absence of GI symptoms or objective evidence of active colonic inflammation is exceedingly uncommon. The diagnostic challenge is amplified in immunocompromised patients receiving biologic therapy, in whom occult infection must be rigorously excluded. We present a 68-year-old woman with a history …

- Prevalence, Genetic Diversity, and Risk Factors of Cryptosporidium spp. in HIV/AIDS Patients: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (2017-2025). [Review]Can J Infect Dis Med Microbiol. 2026; 2026:2740716.CJ
- CONCLUSIONS: This updated synthesis demonstrates that cryptosporidiosis remains a substantial health burden in HIV/AIDS patients, with notable genetic diversity reflecting both anthroponotic and zoonotic transmission routes. The strong association with immunosuppression, as evidenced by low CD4 counts and diarrheal symptoms, underscores its clinical relevance. These findings highlight the urgent need for improved surveillance, molecular epidemiology, and preventive interventions to mitigate the impact of Cryptosporidium spp. in vulnerable populations.

- Anemia, wasting syndrome, and a history of tattooing form a rare and concerning triad observed in cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Although the overall prevalence of HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) has decreased globally, there is an alarming rise in the risk of transmission linked to unregulated or unlicensed tattooing practices. In this case report, we presen…

- Global burden of enteric infectious diseases, diarrhoeal diseases, and corresponding aetiologies, 1990-2023: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Our findings show that mortality and ASMRs of enteric infectious diseases declined substantially between 1990 and 2023. This decline is consistent with the expansion of public health measures and broader socioeconomic development. However, the burden in 2023 remains considerably high, with the highest mortality concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia. Considering that more than a quarter of all countries had yet to meet the GAPPD mortality target in 2023, sustained efforts are needed to address the persistent burden in affected countries and to adapt to the changing global health landscape.

- Aligning Continuing Medical Education with National Health Needs: A Qualitative Analysis of UP Med Webinar Topics and Hospital Admission Patterns in the Philippines. [Journal Article]Acta Med Philipp. 2026; 60(7):7-24.AM
- CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that the UP Med Webinars have generally aligned with national health priorities, as indicated by PhilHealth claims data, particularly in high-burden fields such as Internal Medicine and Obstetrics. However, gaps in coverage for certain high-priority conditions and procedures point to opportunities for more inclusive and data-driven CME planning. Aligning CME content with evolving health system needs can enhance its relevance, support clinical practice improvements, and ultimately contribute to better population health outcomes in the Philippines.

- Gut Mycobiota Dysbiosis in People Living with HIV/AIDS: Insights from an Argentine Cohort with Severe Immunosuppression. [Journal Article]J Fungi (Basel). 2026 Apr 23; 12(5).JF
- Intestinal dysbiosis is common in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH), yet fungal communities of the gut microbiota (mycobiota) remain poorly characterized, especially in severely immunosuppressed patients. We analyzed the gut mycobiota of 33 PLWH and 20 healthy controls from a public hospital in central Argentina. Most PLWH presented with severe immunosuppression (<200 CD4[+] T cells/μL) and acut…
