- Clinical outcomes of lateral ear canal resection performed in routine clinical practice for chronic otitis externa in dogs: a retrospective descriptive study of 58 ears (2016-2025). [Journal Article]J Small Anim Pract. 2026 Jun 25. [Online ahead of print]JS
- CONCLUSIONS: Lateral ear canal resection performed in routine clinical practice before the development of overt end-stage ear canal disease may suppress progression of chronic otitis externa and support long-term disease manageability. The findings of this study suggest that lateral ear canal resection can be performed in a primary care setting without specialist qualifications or specialised equipment, and may contribute to avoiding progression to total ear canal ablation with lateral bulla osteotomy in similar clinical contexts. In contemporary otitis management, lateral ear canal resection warrants re-evaluation not only as a salvage procedure but as a treatment option to be considered earlier in the disease course.

- Algorithmic approach to skin diseases of the ear. [Journal Article]Clin Dermatol. 2026 Jun 04. [Online ahead of print]CD
- Skin diseases of the external ear (auricle and external auditory canal) are not uncommon. The major findings include erythema, pain, edema, discharge, pruritus, and changes in the shape of the ears. Infectious diseases are quite common in infants and children, inflammatory diseases are more prevalent in adolescents and adults, while keratinocytic malignancies increase by age. The dermatologist ca…

- Chronic ear pruritus, itching of the ear that lasts longer than six weeks, is a common symptom with a wide differential diagnosis that can significantly impair the quality of life. It can arise from such primary dermatologic conditions as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and lupus erythematosus, as well as such infestations as scabies and pediculosis capiti…

- Efficacy and Safety of Finafloxacin Otic Suspension, 0.3% for the Treatment of Acute Otitis Externa: Results from two Phase III Randomized Clinical Studies. [Journal Article]Ann Otol Rhinol Laryngol. 2026 May 28; :34894261453726. [Online ahead of print]AO
- CONCLUSIONS: Finafloxacin otic suspension was statistically superior to vehicle in clinical cures, pathogen eradication, and median time to ear pain resolution. It also demonstrated high efficacy against the primary AOE pathogens, S. aureus and P. aeruginosa, including fluoroquinolone-resistant pathogens. Finafloxacin was well-tolerated with a safety profile equivalent to vehicle.Clinical trial registry name:ClinicalTrials.gov; URL: https://clinicaltrials.gov/Identifier:NCT01535599 and NCT01535560.

- Challenges and future strategies for management of otomycosis caused by Fusarium species: A systematic review and meta-analysis. [Journal Article]Curr Med Mycol. 2025; 11.CM
- CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicated that otomycosis caused by Fusarium species is an emerging clinical entity that warrants attention. Considering the resistance of Fusarium species to most currently available antifungal drug classes, physician awareness and proper diagnostic techniques are essential for timely diagnosis, accurate identification, and appropriate management of this infection.

- Comparison of single or two dose veterinarian-administered protocols and daily at-home prescription canine otitis externa treatments. [Review]Vet Evid. 2026 Jan-Mar; 11(1).VE
- CONCLUSIONS: Two dose veterinarian-administered ear treatments like Osurnia[®] show comparable efficacy in reducing the treatment of otitis externa in adult dogs when compared to daily at home treatments. Both types of treatments demonstrated similar success rates, with no significant difference in recurrence rates across the studies.

- Fast-Dissolving Sodium Alginate-Based Microneedle Patch Integrating Tranilast and Glabridin-Loaded Nanoparticles for Dual-Action Hypertrophic Scar Therapy. [Journal Article]Biomater Res. 2026; 30:0351.BR
- Hypertrophic scars (HSs) are a prevalent skin condition that imposes substantial functional, financial, and aesthetic burdens, with existing treatments often leading to recurrence, pain, and adverse effects. To address these issues, we propose a first-in-class fast-dissolving sodium alginate-based microneedle patch (sMN) that achieves sequential, dual-release kinetics by integrating tranilast (TS…

- Acid ceramidase overactivity drives ceramide loss, leading to atopic dry skin and Th2-skewed immune polarization. [Journal Article]J Pathol. 2026 Jun; 269(2):232-247.JP
- Ceramide deficiency in the stratum corneum (SC) is a key etiological factor in atopic dermatitis (AD). To clarify the direct role of SC ceramide depletion in impairing SC barrier and water-holding functions and in initiating AD-like skin symptoms and disease-specific molecular alterations, we generated Tg mice overexpressing a mutant form of acid ceramidase (aCDase) under the control of the invol…

- Although increasingly studied feline otitis externa (OE) prevalence is not yet well defined. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of OE in a population of privately owned cats in Northern Italy. Cats were clinically, otoscopically and cytologically evaluated. Diagnosis of OE was based on clinical findings along with abnormal ear cytology. The influence of the main demographic variab…

- Cerumen, or ear wax, is a naturally occurring substance that is produced at the lateral one-third of the external auditory canal (EAC). Anatomically, this region houses a collection of pilosebaceous glands that includes ceruminous glands, hair follicles, and sebaceous glands. The modified sweat produced by the ceruminous glands has bacteriocidal and fungicidal properties, functioning to lubricate…
