  • Losing face? Facial activity during evaluative stress is characterized by rigidity, tension and unpredictability. [Journal Article]
Psychoneuroendocrinology. 2026 May 23; 190:107900. [Online ahead of print]Blasberg JU, Thaler J, Engert VP
  • Psychosocial stress detection via cost-effective means could prove a useful tool in the diagnosis of long-term stress experience and subsequent prevention of stress-related health disorders. Facial expressions are both part of and a relay for complex affective states, such as acute stress. In the current post-hoc study we investigated differences in facial activity between participants under acut…
  • Prior contact lens wear reduces susceptibility of the superficially-injured cornea to bacterial adhesion. [Journal Article]
    PLoS One. 2026; 21(5):e0332009.Yang Y, Flandrin O, … Fleiszig SMJPlos
  • Contact lens wear in humans and mice is consistently associated with asymptomatic corneal parainflammation. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the corneal response to lens wear alone can function to protect it against bacterial adhesion enabled by superficial injury. One eye only of mT/mG-LysMcre mice (cell membranes red; Lyz2+ cells green) wore a contact lens for 4-6 days. After lens removal, m…
  • Amniotic Membrane in Ophthalmology: Historical Perspectives, Biological Properties, and Clinical Applications. [Review]
Prog Retin Eye Res. 2026 May 19; :101473. [Online ahead of print]Ashraf M, Elhusseiny AM, … Saeed HNPR
  • The use of amniotic membrane (AM) in ophthalmology has evolved significantly since its first documented application in ocular surface reconstruction in the 1940s. Widespread clinical interest surged in the late 20th century following the development of improved processing and preservation methods. This comprehensive review covers the history, properties, and clinical applications of AM in ophthal…
  • Evaluation of AI Citation Accuracy in Anterior Segment Research. [Journal Article]
Cesk Slov Oftalmol. 2026; 82(Ahead of Print):1-5.Civelekler M, Çıtırık MCS
  • CONCLUSIONS: This pilot study indicates that contemporary AI models, particularly those like DeepSeek, show potential in assisting with citation generation. However, the observed error rates, including instances of hallucination, remain substantial. These findings underscore that rigorous human verification is indispensable when using AI for academic referencing in specialized medical fields, and highlight the need for continuous, version-specific benchmarking as these tools evolve.
  • Topical immunosuppressants for blepharitis in adults. [Systematic Review]
Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2026 May 19; 5:CD013550.Kam KW, Mehraban Far P, … supported by the Cochrane Eyes and Vision Review GroupCD
  • CONCLUSIONS: Topical corticosteroids, with or without antibiotics, including cyclosporine may make little to no difference in reducing signs and symptoms of blepharitis at four to 12 weeks, compared with placebo or antibiotics alone. Topical corticosteroids are generally well tolerated and associated with minimal risk of ocular surface irritation. Topical corticosteroids plus antibiotics probably improve corneal staining compared to antibiotics alone. When managing patients with blepharitis, clinicians should consider the limited quantity and very low certainty of evidence for topical corticosteroids. Conventional lid hygiene and warm compress remain valid therapeutic options.
  • Fat Infiltration in Eyelids: An Uncommon Clinical Case with Long-Term Monitoring. [Case Reports]
    Rom J Ophthalmol. 2026 Jan-Mar; 70(1):154-157.Villate MAM, Tribaldos JACRJ
  • CONCLUSIONS: Fatty infiltration of the eyelids is an exceptionally rare presentation, especially when accompanied by intraconal fat loss and enophthalmos. This case highlights the importance of thorough imaging and histological analysis in atypical eyelid swelling. Surgical resection may offer a definitive and lasting solution. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of its kind.
  • Dialister pneumosintes bacteremia associated with sinusitis and suspected meningitis: a case report and literature review. [Journal Article]
BMC Infect Dis. 2026 May 16. [Online ahead of print]Yamamoto M, Ozeki T, … Fujita YBI
  • CONCLUSIONS: This is an exceptionally rare case of D. pneumosintes bacteremia complicated by meningitis. Given its propensity to originate from odontogenic or sinonasal infections and cause hematogenous dissemination with invasive complications such as abscesses or septic thrombosis, prompt identification is essential. When detected, clinicians should initiate a comprehensive systemic evaluation and consider surgical intervention as part of the treatment strategy. As advanced diagnostic tools such as MALDI-TOF MS and 16S rRNA gene sequencing become more widely available, increased clinical recognition of D. pneumosintes as a potential pathogen in severe anaerobic infections is warranted.
  • Sebastidae-specific food allergy causing anaphylaxis: a pediatric case report and fish allergen analysis. [Journal Article]
BMC Pediatr. 2026 May 14. [Online ahead of print]Tsuge M, Uda K, … Tsukahara HBPed
  • CONCLUSIONS: This case highlights the need for clinicians to recognize fish allergy specific to the Sebastidae family. Identifying the causative non-parvalbumin allergens would improve understanding of fish allergy diversity and individualized dietary management for patients. Additional cases and detailed analyses are necessary to identify the specific allergens involved in Sebastidae allergy.
