- Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a life-threatening hyperinflammatory condition leading to organ dysfunction and death. Primary HLH, driven by genetic mutations that impair immune regulation, predominantly affects children, whereas the secondary (acquired) form is more common in adults. Secondary HLH may be precipitated by various drivers, including medications such as immune checkpoin…

- Comparative analysis of chlamydia pneumoniae pneumonia and Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia in children. [Journal Article]BMC Pediatr. 2026 Jul 15. [Online ahead of print]BPed
- CONCLUSIONS: Compared to MPP, CPP patients is characterized by more frequent chest pain, lower inflammatory marker, and higher eosinophil counts. The presence of decreased breath sounds may serve as a clinical indicator for lobar pneumonia in children with C. pneumoniae infection.

- Likelihood of Bacterial Infection in Immunocompromised Patients Treated With IV Antibiotics for Possible Sepsis. [Journal Article]Crit Care Explor. 2026 Jul 01; 8(7):e1443.CC
- CONCLUSIONS: Only about one-half of immunocompromised patients treated empirically for possible sepsis had definite or probable bacterial infection in retrospect, compared with approximately three-fifths in nonimmunocompromised patients. These findings underscore the complexity of sepsis diagnosis, particularly in immunocompromised patients, and highlight important differences in the conditions that mimic bacterial sepsis in immunocompromised vs. nonimmunocompromised hosts.

- Community-Acquired Pneumococcal Ventriculitis as a Complication of Otogenic Pneumococcal Meningitis: A Case Report. [Journal Article]Case Rep Infect Dis. 2026; 2026:8876814.CR
- Pyogenic ventriculitis is a rare and potentially fatal infection of the ventricular system. While most reported cases are nosocomial and catheter-associated, ventriculitis as a complication of community-acquired bacterial meningitis is uncommon, particularly in adults, and carries a poor prognosis. We report the case of an 82-year-old previously healthy and unvaccinated woman who presented with a…

- Expectorated bronchial casts revealing lymphatic plastic bronchitis due to thoracic duct agenesis: case report. [Journal Article]BMC Pulm Med. 2026 Jul 13. [Online ahead of print]BP
- CONCLUSIONS: This case highlights an unusual and unexpected presentation of bronchial cast formation. While bronchial casts are typically identified and removed bronchoscopically-often preserving the morphology of the bronchial tree-in this patient the casts were not amenable to bronchoscopic removal, and were instead repeatedly expectorated as cohesive clots. Spontaneous expectoration of bronchial casts is a rare phenomenon and underscores the variability in clinical presentation and management challenges of this condition.

- Vascular terror: the strange nightmare of a knotted guidewire during central venous catheterisation. [Case Reports]Br J Cardiol. 2025; 32(2):029.BJ
- A 79-year-old woman presents to the hospital with dyspnoea, fever, and hypotension, and is diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia and septic shock. Resuscitation is initiated with fluids and vasopressors, and a central venous catheter is placed. However, during the procedure, the guide experiences resistance and cannot be removed, becoming trapped. This is confirmed with tomography and recon…

- Mycoplasma pneumoniae Infection in Children: Clinical Features and Outcomes. [Journal Article]Maedica (Bucur). 2026 Jun; 21(2):275-283.M
- CONCLUSIONS: Our findings are consistent with international data and reflect the typical epidemiological profile of MP infection in children. These results contribute to the characterization of MP infection in the post-COVID era and support the need for prospective studies to validate the identified prognostic markers.

- A 43-year old man presented with fever and cough and was initially treated for community-acquired pneumonia. Within 24 h, he deteriorated and was admitted with type 1 respiratory failure. A recent history of exposure to waterlogged fields, along with progressive decline in haemoglobin, platelet counts and deranged liver function tests, raised suspicion for leptospirosis, later confirmed by positi…

- Outbreak of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection in Lebanon during 2023-2024. [Journal Article]J Infect Public Health. 2026 Jul 02; 19(8):103300. [Online ahead of print]JI
- CONCLUSIONS: M. pneumoniae outbreak emerged in Lebanon during 2023-2024, spanning late winter to early summer. The outbreak affected both pediatric and adult populations and was characterized by a broad clinical spectrum but overall favorable outcomes. Strengthening diagnostic capacity, promoting judicious antibiotic use, and establishing regional surveillance systems are essential to ensure timely outbreak recognition and effective public health response.

- Multicentre validation and update of a Legionella prediction score to guide microbiological testing in community-acquired pneumonia. [Journal Article]Int J Infect Dis. 2026 Jul 03; :108955. [Online ahead of print]IJ
- CONCLUSIONS: The SwissLEGIO score is an easy-to-apply screening tool to rule out LD in hospitalised CAP patients. A scores <2 could reduce Legionella-specific testing by 36-52% (at a disease prevalence of 4%) while maintaining high sensitivity for case detection.

- Epidemiology, bacterial coinfection risk factors, and inflammatory markers in children with RSV, AdV, and hMPV pneumonia in Zunyi, China. [Journal Article]BMC Infect Dis. 2026 Jul 01. [Online ahead of print]BI
- CONCLUSIONS: RSV, AdV, and hMPV cause different patterns of illness and inflammation in children with pneumonia in Zunyi, China. When these viruses co-occur with bacteria, the disease becomes more severe, and the risks vary by virus. High IL-6 levels are a shared, early warning sign of viral and bacterial co-infection for all three viruses.

- CONCLUSIONS: This case report highlights the importance of considering rare genetic causes, such as ERCC6L2 mutations, in pediatric aplastic anemia patients with dysmorphic features. Early diagnosis through genetic testing allows for definitive management and surveillance of hematologic malignancies.
