- Investigating Iron Deficiency Anaemia in the Elderly. [Journal Article]Ulster Med J. 2026 Jun; 95(1):11-17.UM
- CONCLUSIONS: Elderly patients referred for investigation of IDA frequently have a high CCI score, making endoscopy a high-risk procedure. A high CCI score and living in a care home are independent risk factors for one-year mortality. Alternative strategies including trans-nasal endoscopy and CT colonography, should be considered as first-line tests to balance diagnostic yield, prognosis and procedural safety.

- Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenges of Symptomatic Meckel's Diverticulum in a 61-Year-Old Man With Comorbid Rectal Adenocarcinoma. [Case Reports]Cureus. 2026 May; 18(5):e109353.C
- Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, yet it remains a diagnostic challenge in adults due to its non-specific presentation and lower prevalence compared to the pediatric population. We report the case of a 61-year-old man with a history of rectosigmoid adenocarcinoma who presented with recurrent, life-threatening hematochezia from a divert…

- Concordance Between Pan-Intestinal Capsule Endoscopy and Colonoscopy for the Detection and Characterization of Colonic Lesions: Post Hoc Analysis on the Impact of Colonic Transit Time. [Journal Article]J Gastroenterol Hepatol. 2026 Jun 21. [Online ahead of print]JG
- CONCLUSIONS: In patients with suspected MLGIB, PCE demonstrates good overall diagnostic performance, with excellent accuracy for clinically significant polyps. CTT is a critical determinant of diagnostic reliability, particularly for polypoid lesions. Rapid colonic transit (< 90 min) warrants cautious interpretation of negative PCE examinations.

- ACR Appropriateness Criteria® Gastrointestinal Bleeding-Child. [Practice Guideline]J Am Coll Radiol. 2026 Jun 05. [Online ahead of print]JA
- Gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is a relatively common presenting complaint in pediatric practices and may arise from either the upper or lower GI tract. Many common causes of GI bleed are benign and self-limited, often requiring only supportive care with no imaging necessary. When indicated, the goal of imaging is to diagnose and localize the source of bleeding to help guide timely, targeted inte…

- CONCLUSIONS: Cancer-associated UEDVT carries higher risks of recurrence and bleeding than noncancer UEDVT. Lung cancer showed the greatest recurrence during treatment. Anticoagulation beyond 90 days was associated with a lower post-treatment recurrence. (Computerized Registry of Patients With Venous Thromboembolism [RIETE]; NCT02832245).

- Clip-Assisted Cyanoacrylate Injection for the Management of a Proximal Colonic Varix. [Journal Article]J Clin Exp Hepatol. 2026 Jul-Aug; 16(4):103560.JC
- Colonic varices are a rare manifestation of portal hypertension and an uncommon cause of lower gastrointestinal bleeding, particularly when involving the proximal colon. We report a case of bleeding hepatic flexure varices in a 23-year-old male with extrahepatic portal vein obstruction (EHPVO) and prior splenectomy with lienorenal shunt. The patient presented with recurrent hematochezia and sever…

- Bean syndrome, also known as blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome, is a rare congenital disorder characterized by multiple venous malformations affecting the skin, soft tissues, and gastrointestinal tract. Its main complication is chronic gastrointestinal bleeding, which can lead to iron-deficiency anemia and a lower quality of life. We present the case of a pediatric patient diagnosed with Bean syndr…

- From Septic Shock to Hemorrhagic Shock: A Rare Presentation of Ischemic Rectal Ulcer in a Critically Ill Patient. [Case Reports]Cureus. 2026 May; 18(5):e108915.C
- Acute hemorrhagic rectal ulcer (AHRU) is an uncommon but clinically significant cause of lower gastrointestinal bleeding in critically ill patients. While stress-related mucosal disease is a well-recognized cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in the intensive care unit (ICU), ischemic injury involving the rectum is less frequently reported. Patients recovering from septic shock, particularly…

- [Venous thromboembolism in patients with various intracranial hemorrhages: a single-center retrospective observational non-randomized study]. [Journal Article]Khirurgiia (Mosk). 2026; (6):60-68.K
- CONCLUSIONS: VTE remains one of the main and often fatal complications of various intracranial hemorrhages. Regular ultrasound of IVC system allows timely diagnosis of venous thrombosis in patients with intracranial hemorrhage, prescription of therapeutic doses of anticoagulants and minimization of risks of fatal PE.

- Clinical phenotypes and imaging evolution of hepatic portal venous gas under conservative management: a single-center case series using albumin and procalcitonin as prognostic stratification anchors. [Journal Article]Front Med (Lausanne). 2026; 13:1745715.FM
- CONCLUSIONS: In conservatively treated HPVG, hypoalbuminemia and elevated PCT were strongly associated with mortality. Imaging follow-up demonstrated complete gas resolution in several patients after control of the underlying disease, indicating HPVG represents a radiologic manifestation rather than a disease entity. Combined evaluation of imaging dynamics and biomarkers may aid early risk stratification and guide individualized management. Further multicenter prospective studies are warranted to validate these findings.

- Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease with clinical presentations that vary depending on the species involved. Schistosomal colitis is a rare manifestation, with few cases documented in the literature. We report a case of a 9-year-old boy presenting with painless hematochezia and a history of residence in a schistosomiasis-endemic region. Colonoscopy revealed evidence of colitis, and hi…

- Microcystic lymphatic malformation of the small intestine presenting as acute abdominal pain in a 5-year-old boy: a case report and review of the literature. [Journal Article]J Med Case Rep. 2026 Jun 15. [Online ahead of print]JM
- CONCLUSIONS: Microcystic lymphatic malformation of the small intestine is a rare but important differential diagnosis in children presenting with acute abdominal pain and localized bowel wall thickening. Because clinical and imaging findings are often nonspecific, definitive diagnosis usually relies on histopathological examination. Complete surgical excision provides both diagnostic confirmation and curative treatment, with excellent short-term outcomes.

We searched PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science up to October 2025. The intervention group was identified from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) wherein feeding was started early (≤72 h), and those with delayed initiation served as controls. Meta-analysis wa…

- Risk factors for rebleeding in acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding: a systematic review and meta-analysis. [Journal Article]Int J Colorectal Dis. 2026 Jun 13. [Online ahead of print]IJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Based on available evidence, several factors, including age ≥ 70 years, blood transfusion requirements, shock at presentation, hypertension, CKD, hyperlipidemia, NSAIDs use, active bleeding on colonoscopy, colonic diverticular bleeding, and non-aspirin antiplatelet treatment, may be associated with an increased risk of rebleeding after ALGIB. Early identification of these risk factors and implementation of individualized interventions may help improve patient outcomes.
