- The oral cavity as a bioreactor in halitosis. [Journal Article]J Breath Res. 2026 Aug 18. [Online ahead of print]JB
- Halitosis is a prevalent yet often underestimated clinical condition with multifactorial etiology, predominantly arising from intra-oral sources such as periodontal disease, tongue coating and xerostomia. Central to its pathogenesis is the microbial degradation of sulfur-containing substrates, which lead to the production of volatile sulfur compounds and other volatile organic compounds responsib…

- Prevalence and determinants of self-reported halitosis in Saudi Arabia: a nationwide cross-sectional study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: SRH is common among Saudi adults and appears to be more closely related to perceived oral health and oral hygiene behaviours than to sociodemographic factors and systemic or nasal conditions assessed in this study. These findings support integrating SRH assessment into oral health promotion and routine dental care, with emphasis on preventive oral hygiene, professional consultation, and culturally appropriate public health strategies. Future studies combining self-reported measures with objective clinical assessment are needed to distinguish perceived from clinically confirmed halitosis and to guide targeted interventions.

- Evaluation of Factors Associated with Post-Tonsillectomy Bleeding in Adults. [Journal Article]Iran J Otorhinolaryngol. 2026; 38(3):189-196.IJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Several patient- and surgery-related factors were associated with post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage in adults. Recognition of these associations may aid in perioperative risk assessment and postoperative management.

- Salvage reconstruction of an endoscopic ultrasound-guided gastroenterostomy using a tubular enteral stent after inadvertent transcolonic lumen-apposing metal stent deployment. [Journal Article]VideoGIE. 2026 Aug; 11(8):346-349.V
- CONCLUSIONS: Transcolonic stent placement through the LAMS appears to be a feasible rescue solution for managing inadvertent gastrocolostomy after EUS-GE in the presence of a concurrent colojejunal fistula.

- Oral malodor control with a stabilized stannous fluoride toothpaste compared to sodium monofluorophosphate: A randomized controlled trial. [Randomized Controlled Trial]Am J Dent. 2026 Aug; 39(4):177-180.AJ
- CONCLUSIONS: The 0.454% stannous fluoride toothpaste stabilized with zinc phosphate provided a superior, long-lasting solution for overnight oral malodor management compared to a standard sodium monofluorophosphate toothpaste after 3 weeks of use.
- Stannous Fluoride Toothpaste: Improving gingival health without a new habit adoption. [Review]J Dent Hyg. 2026 Aug 03; 100(4):68-74.JD
- Purpose Dental hygienists are uniquely positioned to improve oral and overall health outcomes with evidence-based treatment plans. One recommendation that has yet to see its full potential is the use of stannous fluoride (SnF2) toothpaste. Stannous fluoride is more than just an anticaries agent. Its formulation within a toothpaste offers superior performance in reducing plaque, gingivitis, sensit…
- Exploring the potential of extracellular matrix modulation to modify oral biofilm architecture. [Review]
- Biofilms are well-organized, surface-attached colonies of microorganisms that can thrive in host cavities. A balanced, diverse mix of protective microbes in these biofilms helps preserve host health. Dysbiosis in biofilms is responsible for consequential diseases in associated tissues. Dietary factors and other xenobiotics can cause ecological dysbiosis in the oral cavity that underpins dental ca…

- Microbial volatile organic compounds and olfactory receptors in wound malodor. [Systematic Review]Front Cell Infect Microbiol. 2026; 16:1833939.FC
- Wound odor is a common symptom in patients with chronic wounds. Malodorous wounds can result in embarrassment, anxiety, and, therefore, in social isolation of the patient. Current treatment options are limited and focused on masking the odor. Current approaches to wound odor management have notable limitations and fail to adequately address existing therapeutic needs. Wound odor is multifactorial…

- Multifactorial assessment of halitosis in systemically and orally healthy orthodontic patients: airway dimensions, breathing pattern, and comparison with a portable breath analyzer. [Journal Article]J Breath Res. 2026 Aug 06; 20(3).JB
- Halitosis is a multifactorial condition influenced by airway-related factors and breathing patterns. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between airway dimensions, craniofacial morphology, and breathing type with halitosis in orthodontic patients. In addition, the agreement between the portable breath analyzer and the organoleptic method, as well as the role of self-reported and physiol…

- Adverse effects of removable orthodontic aligners: A systematic review with single-arm meta-analysis. [Systematic Review]PLoS One. 2026; 21(7):e0350741.Plos
- CONCLUSIONS: Short-term pain and minor apical root resorption appear to be the most frequently reported adverse effects of removable orthodontic aligners, although the certainty of evidence varies across outcomes. Speech alterations, discomfort, and white spot lesions have also been reported.

- From dysbiotic gut to malodorous mouth: targeting microbial metabolism for gastrointestinal type halitosis. [Review]J Breath Res. 2026 Aug 06; 20(3).JB
- This article reviews the microbiological mechanisms of halitosis, the oral-gut axis, the role of the gut microbiome, related metabolic pathways, and their associations with gastrointestinal diseases, and explores intervention strategies based on microbial regulation. Halitosis is primarily caused by volatile sulfur compounds produced by oral microorganisms, especially gram-negative anaerobic bact…

- Emotional, technical, and ethical experiences of nursing students performing oral hygiene for dependent older adults: a qualitative study. [Journal Article]BMC Geriatr. 2026 Jul 08. [Online ahead of print]BG
- CONCLUSIONS: Oral hygiene in dependent older adults is an essential but often underestimated component of care. Insufficient oral care may contribute to malnutrition, muscle weakness, chronic pain, halitosis, and local or systemic infections, thereby compromising health, dignity, and quality of life in older populations [6-10]. These findings align with World Health Organisation recommendations emphasizing strengthened oral health systems and universal coverage by 2030 [6].
