- Rapidly Liver-Accumulating BiOCl@ITA Nanozyme for Synergistic ROS Scavenging and Macrophage Reprogramming in APAP-Induced Liver Injury. [Journal Article]ACS Appl Mater Interfaces. 2026 Aug 18. [Online ahead of print]AA
- Acetaminophen (APAP) overdose is the leading cause of acute liver failure worldwide, yet existing therapy relies solely on N-acetylcysteine (NAC), whose efficacy diminishes markedly beyond an 8-10 h therapeutic window. The underlying pathology involves a self-amplifying cycle of reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction and macrophage-mediated inflammation, and strategies that concurrently sca…

- A novel tumor necrosis factor-alpha-targeting protein degrader for the treatment of acute liver failure. [Journal Article]Int J Biol Macromol. 2026 Aug 17; :154108. [Online ahead of print]IJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Nb-NPC2 (IGF2m) represents a novel avenue with therapeutic potential for ALF, primarily via lysosome-targeting degradation of TNF-α.

- Zilebesiran in Hypertension: Reversibility, Acute Illness, and Therapeutic Flexibility. [Review]Am J Cardiovasc Drugs. 2026 Aug 17. [Online ahead of print]AJ
- Zilebesiran is an investigational RNA interference therapeutic that lowers blood pressure by silencing hepatic angiotensinogen, thereby offering sustained antihypertensive activity with infrequent dosing in selected ambulatory populations. This profile is attractive for long-term blood pressure control, but it also raises an unresolved clinical question: how should acute illness be managed when u…

- Fulminant Postpartum Weil's Syndrome Presenting with Refractory Seizures and Multiorgan Failure: A Case Report and Critical Care Management. [Review]Niger Med J. 2026 May-Jun; 67(3):1220-1224.NM
- Leptospirosis is a globally prevalent zoonotic infection with protean manifestations, while severe disease (Weil's syndrome) is uncommon and rarely reported in the postpartum period, where it can closely mimic obstetric emergencies. We report a rare case of severe postpartum leptospirosis complicated by sudden-onset seizures and multiorgan failure. A 32-year-old woman developed generalized tonic-…

- Unraveling the Hepatorenal Connection: Intrarenal Resistive Index as a Sentinel Diagnostic Tool in Chronic Liver Disease. [Review]Niger Med J. 2026 May-Jun; 67(3):1004-1013.NM
- CONCLUSIONS: Early detection of renal impairment in cirrhotic patients can be effectively facilitated by measuring the Intrarenal Resistive Index (RRI) using renal duplex ultrasound. This non-invasive diagnostic method allows for the evaluation of intrarenal hemodynamics and has been shown to exhibit a positive correlation between RRI values and the degree of liver decompensation.

- Antimony- and NSAID-Induced Hepatotoxicity at the Molecular Crossroads: Redox, Inflammasome and Programmed Cell-Death Networks as Therapeutic Targets for Natural Hepatoprotective Agents. [Review]J Appl Toxicol. 2026 Aug 16. [Online ahead of print]JA
- Drug- and metal-induced liver damage (DILI/MILI) continues to be a predominant cause of acute hepatic failure globally, with two clinically significant but mechanistically underexplored triggers being the metalloid antimony (Sb) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs). This review consolidates current molecular findings about the convergence of Sb(III)/Sb(V) species and NSAID rea…

- Assessement of Survival and its Affecting Factors in Adult Liver Transplant Patients: A Retrospective Cohort Study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Older recipient, donor age, and higher MELD score were independently associated with higher mortality after liver transplantation. Patients transplanted from 2010 onward experienced better survival, reflecting advancements in transplant care over time. Additionally, compared to acute liver failure (ALF), etiologies such as primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), Budd-Chiari syndrome, cryptogenic liver disease, hepatitis B virus (HBV), and primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) were associated with significantly lower mortality risk and improved long-term survival.

- Invasive Curvularia hawaiiensis infection with pleuropericardial involvement. [Case Reports]
- We report a 31-year-old woman with cirrhosis who developed bilateral pleural and pericardial effusions caused by Curvularia hawaiiensis. The patient developed worsening shock and multiorgan failure during hospitalization despite broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal therapy. Her course was complicated further by development of bilateral pleural effusions and pericardial effusion. Pericardio…

- Venous excess and lung ultrasound during continuous renal replacement therapy in critically ill patients (VExLUS-RRT): a prospective observational study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Systemic and pulmonary congestion assessed by multiorgan point-of-care ultrasound was associated with increased 90-day mortality in AKI patients receiving CRRT. Future studies should explore the utility of these tools in guiding individualised fluid management during CRRT.

- Reversible Subacute Liver Failure Following Revisional Malabsorptive Bariatric Surgery: A Case Report. [Case Reports]
- Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for obesity and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Although most patients experience improvement in hepatic steatosis and fibrosis after surgery, severe hepatic decompensation has rarely been reported following malabsorptive procedures. Early recognition of potentially reversible causes of liver failure is essential to pre…

- A rare but lethal hepatic infection: Emphysematous hepatitis - Case report and literature review. [Case Reports]
- Emphysematous hepatitis (EH) is a rare and often fatal liver infection characterized by gas within the hepatic parenchyma without abscess formation. Diabetes mellitus and gastrointestinal malignancies are the main predisposing factors. Prompt diagnosis and aggressive treatment are essential due to its fulminant course. A 67-year-old male with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes and a long smoking histor…

- Acute on chronic liver failure in erythropoietic protoporphyria: A case report and review of the literature. [Case Reports]Hepatol Forum. 2026; 7(3):288-291.HF
- Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) is a disease caused by an inborn error of heme biosynthesis. It manifests as painful photosensitivity in childhood. Liver disease occurs due to the deposition of protoporphyrin. Cholestasis due to protoporphyrin leads to a vicious cycle of worsening, which can lead to liver failure. A 29-year-old woman presented with a three-month history of intermittent low-gr…

- Acetaminophen toxicity: Patterns of liver injury, effects on hospital length of stay, and the need for inpatient psychiatric care. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: The majority of the patients with acetaminophen overdose survived to discharge. Most cases of acetaminophen overdose were intentional and were significantly associated with the presence of a psychiatric comorbidity. Intentional and unintentional overdoses had similar rates of ALF. Inpatient psychiatric hospitalization was frequently required, particularly for patients with intentional overdose.
