- Mapping HLA class I and II allele associations with hepatitis C related liver disease progression in an Egyptian cohort. [Journal Article]Discov Oncol. 2026 May 07; 17(1).DO
- CONCLUSIONS: These preliminary data suggest possible associations of certain HLA alleles and HCV-related liver disease progression in Egyptian patients, possibly serving as candidate biomarkers for risk stratification. Nonetheless, larger, population-based studies with confirmed HCV genotyping, comprehensive treatment data, and updated controls reflecting current Egyptian HLA allele frequencies are needed to substantiate these associations.

- Antiviral treatment for chronic HBV infection in the "high-replicative low-inflammatory" phase has not been widely recommended. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of antiviral therapy in this patient population and analyze peripheral immunological characteristics in relation to treatment response. In this randomized controlled trial, HBeAg-positive patients with normal ALT and e…

- From Bench to Bedside: Multifunctional Nanoplatforms in the Fight Against Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. [Review]Int J Nanomedicine. 2026; 21:593450.IJ
- Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects approximately 25% of the global adult population and represents a major public health burden, characterized by disease progression from steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), fibrosis, cirrhosis, and potentially hepatocellular carcinoma. Despite this high prevalence and serious clinical outcomes, no pharmacologic therapies are currentl…

- Frequency of Hyponatremia in Patients With Chronic Liver Disease Presenting to the Outpatient Department: A Cross-Sectional Study. [Journal Article]Cureus. 2026 Apr; 18(4):e106467.C
- CONCLUSIONS: Hyponatremia is prevalent in stable CLD patients presenting to outpatient clinics and correlates strongly with indicators of disease severity. Routine monitoring of serum sodium levels in outpatient settings may enable early identification of high-risk individuals and timely therapeutic interventions to delay hepatic decompensation.

- Clinical Setting Modulates the Association Between Genetic Variants and Fibrosis Severity Across the Spectrum of MASLD. [Journal Article]Liver Int. 2026 Jun; 46(6):e70675.LI
- CONCLUSIONS: Genetic associations with fibrosis in MASLD appear to be context dependent. PNPLA3 rs738409 shows consistent but markedly greater effect sizes in tertiary-care settings, suggesting that clinical and metabolic context may play an important role in modulating genetic risk beyond ancestry alone.

- Interferon lambda in anti-viral defense and cancer: dual roles, mechanism and therapeutic potential. [Review]J Transl Med. 2026 May 06. [Online ahead of print]JT
- CONCLUSIONS: By elucidating the complex interplay between IFN-λ and the immune system, this review provides insights into its dual functions in immune-related diseases, its potential as a biomarker for disease monitoring and prediction of therapy response, and its potential for the development of targeted therapies in cancer treatment and viral infections. However, to improve the patients' outcomes in infectious diseases and cancer management, a comprehensive understanding of its context-specific effects is required to optimize its clinical application.

- Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a major cause of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) worldwide, with more than 250 million people living with chronic infection despite effective prophylactic vaccination. While current treatments provide durable suppression of viral replication and reduce liver-related complications, they rarely achieve functional cure, defined as sustai…

- Spatial-quantitative profiling of intrahepatic HBsAg heterogeneity and clustered distribution in chronic HBV infection. [Journal Article]JHEP Rep. 2026 Mar 04; 8(6):101810. [Online ahead of print]JR
- CONCLUSIONS: This study provides quantitative evidence that clustered HBsAg-rich hepatocytes are more prevalent in individuals who are HBeAg-negative and predominantly harbor nuclear-localized HBV DNA originating from integration and/or cccDNA, thereby providing new insights into phase-specific intrahepatic viral heterogeneity and advancing understanding of host-virus interactions in HBV persistence.

- Peaked-to-flat transition in quasispecies structure evolution. [Journal Article]Virus Evol. 2026; 12(1):veag024.VE
- Previous studies based on clinical data from hepatitis C virus and hepatitis E virus infections revealed a deterministic evolution of quasispecies structure, irrespective of haplotype identities, towards a flat-like landscape, characterized by the absence of dominance and high evenness, combined with high haplotype synonymy. Here, two idealized limiting quasispecies states, A and Z, are defined, …

- Liver Fibrosis: Molecular Pathogenesis and Therapeutic Interventions. [Review]MedComm (2020). 2026 May; 7:e70750.M
- Liver fibrosis is a common pathological process, leading to the development of end-stage liver diseases. It is triggered by various etiological drivers including viral hepatitis, metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), and cholestasis. Given the substantial impact of liver fibrosis on individuals and its associated mortality rates, effective management of this condition is crucial f…

- Splenic Marginal Zone Lymphoma as a Vascular-Appearing Mass in a Patient With Sustained Virologic Response to Hepatitis C Therapy. [Case Reports]Am J Case Rep. 2026 May 06; 27:e953179.AJ
- BACKGROUND Splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL) is a low-grade B-cell lymphoma associated with chronic hepatitis C infection. It typically presents with diffuse splenomegaly rather than a focal splenic mass. Focal splenic lesions with vascular enhancement patterns are usually due to vascular tumors which may be benign or malignant, examples of which include sclerosing angiomatoid nodular transfo…

- A Tale of METAVIR and Congestive Hepatic Fibrosis Score: Evaluating Liver Fibrosis Assessment in Fontan Patient. [Journal Article]
- While liver biopsy is the gold standard for assessing liver fibrosis, the optimal scoring system for Fontan-associated liver disease (FALD) is debated. This study was to determine the correlation and agreement between the METAVIR score, used for chronic hepatitis, and the Congestive Hepatic Fibrosis Score (CHFS), specifically designed for congestive hepatopathy. We conducted a retrospective revie…
