- When will South Africa take the prevention of chronic HBV infection seriously? [Journal Article]S Afr Med J. 2026 Mar 02; 116(2):e3771.SA
- South Africa (SA) bears a significant burden of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, with a significant prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) among pregnant women. In response, the National Department of Health has recommended targeted birth-dose vaccination for infants born to HBsAg-positive mothers. While we commend the move towards antenatal HBsAg screening to identify infected pregn…

- Assessment of liver fibrosis in Chronic hepatitis B: performance of hematological parameters. [Journal Article]Tunis Med. 2026 Mar 12; 104(3):477-482.TM
- CONCLUSIONS: Blood count parameters are non-invasive markers of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B. Thus, significant fibrosis can be ruled out in patients with RDW < 41.8 FL, which could help avoid liver biopsy in these patients.

- Sustained HBsAg clearance induced by pegylated interferon α-2b in HBeAg-negative patients with low baseline HBsAg. [Journal Article]Front Cell Infect Microbiol. 2026; 16:1803818.FC
- CONCLUSIONS: Low HBsAg and HBeAg negative patients exhibited favorable long-term persistence of HBsAg clearance induced by Peg-IFNα-2b. We identified the EOT HBsAb levels (with levels >1000 IU/mL predicting 100% sustained clearance) and the duration of consolidation therapy as key determinants of long-term treatment success, and proposed 96 weeks as the optimal follow-up time point for these patients.

- Modeling Reveals How Direct-Acting Antivirals Redirect HBV Capsid Assembly Pathways to Noninfectious Products. [Journal Article]bioRxiv. 2026 May 26.B
- Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections cause chronic liver disease, resulting in about one million deaths per year, and there is currently no cure. Recent work has shown that a class of small molecules called capsid assembly modulators (CAMs) is promising for treating HBV. CAMs bind to HBV capsid protein subunits and alter their assembly, leading to non-functional and malformed structures rather than…

- [Acute-on-chronic liver failure induced by hemochromatosis in a patient with post-hepatitis B cirrhosis: A case report and literature review]. [Journal Article]Zhong Nan Da Xue Xue Bao Yi Xue Ban. 2026 Feb 28; 51(2):221-227.ZN
- Hemochromatosis (HC) is a disorder of iron metabolism characterized by excessive iron deposition in the body due to genetic mutations or secondary factors, leading to organ damage and dysfunction, particularly in the liver, heart, and pancreas. This disease is relatively rare in China, and cases of hemochromatosis occurring on the basis of post-hepatitis B‑related cirrhosis and subsequently induc…

- Semaglutide is a long-acting glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA), primarily used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity. Common adverse drug reactions (ADRs) include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation, whereas liver function-related ADRs are relatively rare. We report a rare and severe case of semaglutide-induced acute-on-chroni…

- Traveling with chronic viral hepatitis. [Review]
- Viral hepatitis is one of the infectious diseases with an overall increasing mortality rate. The global burden of acute viral hepatitis remains substantial, with hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E responsible for millions of new cases annually and significant morbidity, especially in resource-limited settings and among travelers to endemic regions. People living with chronic viral hepatitis, especially …

- Comparative evaluation of Hepassocin, DCP, and AFP-L3 for non-invasive assessment of liver fibrosis in Hepatitis B infection. [Journal Article]BMC Infect Dis. 2026 Jun 04. [Online ahead of print]BI
- CONCLUSIONS: HPS and DCP are potential non-invasive biomarkers associated with APRI-defined fibrosis risk in HBV infection and showed superior predictive performance compared with AFP-L3 and routine biochemical markers within APRI-based fibrosis stratification. Their combined application may enhance APRI-based fibrosis risk stratification; however, these findings should be considered preliminary and require validation in independent cohorts using accepted fibrosis reference standards before clinical adoption can be considered.

- CONCLUSIONS: Hepatitis B virus and liver-related complications have a significant impact on HRQoL in the Gambia. The sharp decline in HRQoL with advanced stages highlights the importance of improving early diagnosis and expanding access to treatment to prevent disease progression.

- CONCLUSIONS: This case highlights the diagnostic complexity of overlapping infectious syndromes in an immunocompromised host from an endemic region and demonstrates that even highly complex coinfections can be successfully managed through timely microbiologic confirmation, individualized sequencing of anti-infective and antiretroviral therapies, careful management of drug-drug interactions, and sustained adherence support.

- Sphingolipid homeostasis and dysregulation in liver function and disease. [Review]Life Metab. 2026 Aug; 5(4):loag011.LM
- Sphingolipids regulate hepatic lipid homeostasis, cell survival, inflammation, and tissue repair. In the healthy liver, balanced de novo sphingolipid synthesis, salvage pathways, and sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P)-related signals maintain metabolic flexibility, endothelial integrity, and immune quiescence. Dysregulation of sphingolipid metabolism drives the initiation and progression of chronic li…

- Seroprevalence of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C in Patients Hospitalized in Palliative Care Service. [Journal Article]Saudi Med J. 2026 Jun; 47(6):1008-1016.SM
- CONCLUSIONS: While the seroprevalence of active HBV and HCV infection was low in this palliative cohort, HBsAg positivity was associated with a significantly higher risk of mortality. The high proportion of patients lacking HBV immunity also highlights the need for strengthened infection control measures.
