Br J Dermatol. 2026 Jan 27; 194(2):205-212.Redmond LC, Higgins CABJ
  • A striking characteristic that sets modern humans apart from their ancestors is the lack of a thick fur coat. Despite being popularly dubbed 'the naked ape', humans are covered in 2-3 million vellus hair follicles producing tiny hair fibres. This review explores why humans evolved thinner body hair, with a focus on the need for an effective cooling mechanism. We address anthropological evidence a…
  • Enigma of postmenopausal virilisation: bilateral Leydig cell tumours as the culprit. [Case Reports]

Routine laboratory, adrenal and imaging evaluations were largely unremarkable except for a small left adnexal mass on MRI. With normal dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAS) and cortisol levels, an ovarian source of androgen excess was suspected. The…

  • A wide spectrum of clinical entities can lead to pre and postmenopausal hyperandrogenism, which is characterized by slow or more rapid onset of virilizing symptoms (menstrual irregularities, hirsutism, androgenetic alopecia). Functional hyperandrogenism in the context of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) remains the most prevalent cause for hyperandrogenism both in pre and postmenopausal females; …

Clin Endocrinol (Oxf). 2026 May; 104(5):407-414.Ravindra S, Samal SK, … Sarathi VCE
  • CONCLUSIONS: Hyperandrogenic manifestations are less frequent in children < 8 years with VOT. Elevated 17-OHP and/or DHEAS should not exclude the possibility of VOT. Etiological spectrum of paediatric VOT is relatively age-specific. Larger multicenter studies with longer follow-up are warranted to better delineate prognosis and management strategies.
