- Biographical Discovery, Affirmation, and Disruption: Trans and Nonbinary Peoples' Experiences Negotiating Gender and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. [Journal Article]Sociol Health Illn. 2026 May; 48(4):e70191.SH
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine irregularity in people who are assigned-female-at-birth and are of reproductive age. PCOS causes infertility, irregular periods and hirsutism. Cis women with PCOS describe these symptoms as 'masculinising,' which makes them feel inauthentic as women. However, trans and nonbinary people with PCOS may desire a more masculine appearance, …

- Development and validation of an LC-MS/MS assay for serum 5α-androstane-3α, 17β-diol 17-glucuronide with enhanced interference resolution. [Journal Article]J Chromatogr B Analyt Technol Biomed Life Sci. 2026 Jun 01; 1277:125049.JC
- 5α-androstane-3α,17β-diol 17-glucuronide (3α-diol G) is a testosterone metabolite and an important biomarker of hormonal dysregulation, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and virilizing syndromes in women such as idiopathic hirsutism. While immunoassay kits are commonly used for its quantification in clinical laboratories, these methods are prone to interference due to the structural simi…

- Bilateral ovarian steroid cell tumor in a postmenopausal woman with progressive hyperandrogenism. [Case Reports]JCEM Case Rep. 2026 Apr; 4(4):luag020.JC
- Severe hyperandrogenism with new-onset virilization in postmenopausal women is rare and often associated with androgen-secreting tumors. Nevertheless, a comprehensive differential diagnosis must be considered, including ovarian hyperthecosis and Cushing syndrome. We report a 71-year-old woman with progressive hirsutism over 1-2 years, presenting with severe hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance…

- Comparison of Substances in Combined Oral Contraceptives Used in Acne Vulgaris, Hirsutism, Migraine, and Dysmenorrhea. [Review]Med Sci Monit. 2026 Feb 22; 32:e949520.MS
- Statistics from 2024 have shown that 50% of young women use contraception. Nowadays, it is not only used to prevent pregnancy. Positive effects of this treatment can be seen in cases of acne vulgaris, hirsutism, and painful menstruation. A controversial topic is the use of combined oral contraception (COC) in women with migraine with aura - it is contraindicated, but for headaches associated with…

- Management of Facial Hair in Women. [Review]Cutis. 2025 Dec; 116(6):198-201.C
- Facial hair in women generally is considered to be unwanted. The presence of facial hair in women and its associated conditions, treatmens options, and management strategies are not commonly discussed in most medical care settings. The United States military, which includes more than 220,000 active-duty female service members, has strict and specific grooming standards, which for many years have …

- Computed Tomography Angiography-Assisted Ovarian Vein Sampling for Diagnosing an Androgen-Producing Leydig Cell Tumor: A Case Report. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: This case underscores the utility of CT angiography-assisted OVS in localizing androgen-producing ovarian tumors when conventional imaging is inconclusive. Functional confirmation of laterality enabled fertility-sparing surgery (FSS) in a reproductive-aged patient and led to optimal clinical outcomes. Adapting adrenal vein sampling (AVS) methodology to OVS represents a valuable diagnostic approach in selected cases of severe hyperandrogenism.

- Not quite naked: the bare necessities of human body hair evolution. [Review]Br J Dermatol. 2026 Jan 27; 194(2):205-212.BJ
- A striking characteristic that sets modern humans apart from their ancestors is the lack of a thick fur coat. Despite being popularly dubbed 'the naked ape', humans are covered in 2-3 million vellus hair follicles producing tiny hair fibres. This review explores why humans evolved thinner body hair, with a focus on the need for an effective cooling mechanism. We address anthropological evidence a…

- Enigma of postmenopausal virilisation: bilateral Leydig cell tumours as the culprit. [Case Reports]BMJ Case Rep. 2026 Jan 06; 19(1).BC
- A postmenopausal woman in her 50s presented with progressive hirsutism, virilisation and markedly elevated serum testosterone levels (>1500 ng/dL). Routine laboratory, adrenal and imaging evaluations were largely unremarkable except for a small left adnexal mass on MRI. With normal dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAS) and cortisol levels, an ovarian source of androgen excess was suspected. The…

- Nandrolone Decanoate for Postmenopausal Osteoporosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Trials. [Review]
- Postmenopausal osteoporosis is often accompanied by reduced muscle mass and chronic bone pain, amplifying fracture risk and functional decline. Nandrolone decanoate (ND), a synthetic anabolic steroid, has been proposed as a dual-acting agent that may benefit both bone and muscle through osteoanabolic and myoanabolic mechanisms, yet its therapeutic value in osteoporosis remains uncertain. We condu…

- Rare Conditions of Hyperandrogenism Through Lifespan: A Case Series. [Case Reports]
- A wide spectrum of clinical entities can lead to pre and postmenopausal hyperandrogenism, which is characterized by slow or more rapid onset of virilizing symptoms (menstrual irregularities, hirsutism, androgenetic alopecia). Functional hyperandrogenism in the context of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) remains the most prevalent cause for hyperandrogenism both in pre and postmenopausal females; …

- Pediatric Adrenocortical Carcinoma Presenting With Virilization: A Case of a Low-Grade Tumor in a Young Child. [Case Reports]
- Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is an uncommon and severe malignancy, particularly in the pediatric population. It often manifests with warning signs of hormonal imbalance, such as hirsutism and precocious puberty. Timely diagnosis is crucial for effective management. We present the case of a 4-year-old female who presented with indications of virilization, including excessive hirsutism, acne, cli…

- Paediatric Virilizing Ovarian Tumors: A Systematic Review. [Systematic Review]Clin Endocrinol (Oxf). 2026 May; 104(5):407-414.CE
- CONCLUSIONS: Hyperandrogenic manifestations are less frequent in children < 8 years with VOT. Elevated 17-OHP and/or DHEAS should not exclude the possibility of VOT. Etiological spectrum of paediatric VOT is relatively age-specific. Larger multicenter studies with longer follow-up are warranted to better delineate prognosis and management strategies.
