- Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension in a Patient With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Antiphospholipid Syndrome: A Case of Surgical Management With Pulmonary Endarterectomy. [Case Reports]Cureus. 2026 Mar; 18(3):e106075.C
- We present the case of a 22-year-old female with a history of systemic lupus erythematosus and antiphospholipid syndrome, complicated by recurrent deep vein thrombosis of the lower extremities and pulmonary embolism, who subsequently developed chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. The patient presented with progressive dyspnea, ultimately limiting daily activities, and was managed with l…

- "Aare You Safe?" River-related presentations and clinical outcomes at a Swiss tertiary emergency department: a retrospective cross-sectional study. [Journal Article]Swiss Med Wkly. 2026 Feb 26; 156:4839.SM
- CONCLUSIONS: River-related ED visits are a recurring seasonal concern, primarily affecting young males. People with non-Swiss nationality and those engaging in high-risk activities are at higher risk. Adopting a multilingual approach could be a key objective of safety campaigns to more effectively reduce risks for non-Swiss swimmers and promote safer swimming practices in urban waters. Prevention efforts should continue to focus on public education, enhanced safety signage and improved emergency preparedness.

- [Application of infrared thermography in breast reconstruction and plastic surgery and limb reconstruction]. [Journal Article]Zhongguo Xiu Fu Chong Jian Wai Ke Za Zhi. 2026 Feb 15; 40(2):302-309.ZX
- CONCLUSIONS: Infrared thermography offers a convenient, non-invasive, and objective supplementary indicator for breast and limb reconstruction. This technology can be used intra- and post-operatively to assess blood supply, thereby aiding surgical decision-making and reducing the risk of postoperative complications. However, attention should be paid to the potential for false positives and false negatives.

- Characteristics and Risk Factors of Intraoperative Hypothermia in Adults: A Multicenter Prospective Observational Clinical Study. [Journal Article]
- Objective: Intraoperative hypothermia is a common perioperative complication. This large-scale, multicenter, prospective clinical study aimed to delineate the occurrence patterns of intraoperative hypothermia in adults and to identify its major independent risk factors, thereby providing evidence-based support for early clinical risk assessment and intervention. Methods: This study adopted a mult…

- Nonlinear bioheat model for dynamics of hypothermia and frostbite. Ⅰ. Modeling aspects. [Journal Article]Math Biosci Eng. 2026 Jan; 23(1):210-241.MB
- We propose a new bioheat model for thermoregulation in the human body in response to cold environments, with emphasis on hypothermia and frostbite in exposed extremities. The model couples the bioheat transfer equation in the extremity with a differential equation that describes the core temperature. We used simulations to illustrate the connection between microscale vascular exchange and the eff…

- IntroductionSubmersion injuries are rare yet life-threatening events. The Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) registry is the largest national trauma registry in the United States. We describe the epidemiology and outcomes of submersion injuries in the TQIP registry.MethodsWe analyzed data from the TQIP registry for all encounters with a primary or secondary mechanism that included a submer…

- Physiological Impacts of Cold Conditions during Moderate Intensity Activity while Wearing Firefighter Protective Clothing. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Moderate-intensity exercise in TPC increased physiological and perceptual measures more in a thermal neutral environment than a cold environment. Recovery was faster following the cold condition. This may allow firefighters to work for longer durations or recover faster, possibly allowing for fewer crews on scene. However, this study did not account for the risk of other cold induced conditions due to prolonged exposure, such as frostbite. Further investigations should be conducted on cold weather firefighting and its impact on firefighters to establish guidelines and standard operating procedures.

- The forensic medical investigation of occurrence mechanisms (causes) and color spectrum of cadaveric spots in corpses of persons who were victims of general accidental hypothermia remains a relevant topic, causing many discussions in the scientific literature. Issues concerning the color, localization, degree of pronouncement and timing of cadaveric spots occurrence require careful analysis as th…

- Study on human thermophysiology and severe-cold protection during physical activity in simulated high-altitude environments. [Journal Article]Int J Biometeorol. 2025 Dec; 69(12):3463-3477.IJ
- The unique climate of plateau regions increases the risk of cold-related conditions, such as hypothermia and frostbite. Therefore, it is essential to study and improve severe-cold protective equipment for use in these environments. This research involved an experiment simulating a plateau at an altitude of 4,500 m, with an ambient temperature of -9℃ and 23℃. Sixteen healthy male participants perf…

- Perioperative Care of Free Flap Patients: A Scoping Review of Current Evidence. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Despite existing literature, current practice is largely informed by expert opinion instead of evidence-based data. Interventions supported by evidence include delaying flap surgery to optimize patient factors and obtaining baseline blood work. Avoidance of perioperative hypothermia is indicated, but no evidence exists for supplemental postoperative warming. Restrictive protocols for blood transfusions are likely safe. The literature supported clinical monitoring of unburied flaps, but the optimal schedule and duration were unknown. There is evidence to support the use of gabapentin to improve postoperative pain and decrease opioid use. In lower extremity free flaps, allowing early leg dangling is likely safe.

- Orthopedic complications of sickle-cell disease in children. [Review]Orthop Traumatol Surg Res. 2026 Feb; 112(1S):104416.OT
- Sickle cell disease is the most common serious genetic disease in the world. It is a systemic disease, characterized by vaso-occlusive phenomena, especially in the bone capillary network. Orthopedic complications are thus the most common, with a strong impact on quality of life. In children, these complications mainly comprise bone infarction, epiphyseal aseptic osteonecrosis, and bone and joint …
