- Systemic energy metabolism changes in patients with heart failure receiving specific oral nutritional supplements in combination with Mediterranean diet. [Journal Article]Front Nutr. 2026; 13:1880396.FN
- CONCLUSIONS: In patients with HF, nutritional support combining MD with hypercaloric, hyperproteic, omega-3-enriched ONS was associated with distinct metabolomic adaptations, particularly affecting branched-chain amino acid profiles in patients with sarcopenia. These findings suggest a potential role for comprehensive nutritional strategies in modulating systemic and muscle-related metabolic pathways linked to functional status and prognosis in high-risk HF populations.

- The Microplastic-Gut Microbiota Axis: A Unifying Framework Linking Environmental Pollution to Undernutrition, Obesity, and Metabolic Dysfunction. [Review]Curr Dev Nutr. 2026 Aug; 10(8):109445.CD
- The ubiquity of plastic pollution has rendered dietary microplastic (MP) ingestion unavoidable, introducing an unrecognized yet pervasive threat to human nutritional health. This review systematically synthesizes evidence from rodent and aquatic animal models, in vitro human gut microbiota simulations, and cross-sectional human observational studies to conceptualize the "MP-gut microbiota-nutriti…

- Contrasting Starvation Strategies in Congeneric Pentatomids: A Predator (Arma chinensis) Versus a Pest (Halyomorpha halys). [Journal Article]Arch Insect Biochem Physiol. 2026 Aug; 122(4):e70207.AI
- Closely related insect species with different feeding habits may exhibit divergent physiological responses to starvation. Here, we compared the predatory Arma chinensis and the phytophagous pest Halyomorpha halys under identical starvation conditions. A. chinensis survived significantly longer than H. halys (females: 39 vs. 9 days; males: 29 vs. 7 days), with slower body weight decline. Starvatio…

- Fatal neurological complications in anorexia nervosa: a case report of osmotic demyelination syndrome in the binge-eating/purging subtype. [Case Reports]BMC Psychiatry. 2026 Aug 19; 26(1).BP
- CONCLUSIONS: This case describes ODS occurring after correction of severe hyponatremia in a patient with previously unrecognized AN-BP and multiple electrolyte abnormalities. Although causality cannot be established from a single case, the temporal association highlights the importance of cautious electrolyte correction, close neurological monitoring, and early MRI evaluation when new neuropsychiatric symptoms emerge. Further studies are needed to clarify the factors contributing to ODS risk in patients with eating disorders.

- Hidden vitamin D insufficiency in a sun-rich equatorial country: age-, sex-, and season-specific evidence from 2961 Somali children. [Journal Article]J Trop Pediatr. 2026 Aug 20; 72(5).JT
- This study aimed to determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency, and to evaluate age-, sex-, and season-specific variations in serum 25(OH)D levels among Somali children and adolescents. This retrospective cross-sectional study included pediatric outpatients aged 0-18 years who attended a tertiary care hospital in Mogadishu, Somalia, between January 2020 and August 2025. Se…

- Life with PEG: Prospective study on complications of and satisfaction with enteral nutrition via gastrostomy. [Journal Article]Z Gastroenterol. 2026 Aug 19. [Online ahead of print]ZG
- Malnutrition is a significant problem with prognostic relevance. Feeding via a PEG tube is the most common form of long-term enteral nutrition, but current data on complications, quality of life under and satisfaction with the tube are not available.

- Associations between transition of malnutrition diagnosis defined by the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition criteria and functionality, mortality, and weaning of enteral nutrition in an inpatient rehabilitation setting: findings from a national surveillance. [Journal Article]Clin Nutr ESPEN. 2026 Aug 19; :105023. [Online ahead of print]CN
- CONCLUSIONS: Persistent and new-onset malnutrition during hospitalization was associated with poorer functional recovery and higher in-hospital mortality in a convalescent rehabilitation ward. Conversely, nutritional improvement was associated with a higher likelihood of successful TF weaning.

- Persistent inflammation, immunosuppression and catabolism syndrome and malnutrition in critically ill patients with sepsis: A multi-center prospective observational study. [Journal Article]Clin Nutr. 2026 Aug 11; 65:106757. [Online ahead of print]CN
- CONCLUSIONS: Approximately 50% of ICU patients with sepsis developed PIICS. Patients with PIICS had higher mortality and worse physical function and quality of life after discharge, although these differences attenuated over time. Pre-existing GLIM malnutrition seemed to be associated with an increased risk of developing PIICS. A causal relationship between nutritional delivery and PIICS development in patients with/without malnutrition requires further investigation.

- The Impact of Conflict on Maternal and Child Health Services: A Scoping Review. [Journal Article]Niger Postgrad Med J. 2026 Sep 01; 33(5):553-560.NP
- Conflicts are unavoidable aspect of human existence, causing disruptions in livelihoods, infrastructure, socioeconomic systems and healthcare access. Among the most severe effects of conflict are those on maternal and child health (MCH) services, on which there is a notable scarcity of research. Consequently, this scoping review examines the impact of conflict on the accessibility of MCH services…

- The potential of vitamins in Huntington's disease: bridging mechanistic evidence with translational limitations and future strategies. [Review]Metab Brain Dis. 2026 Aug 19; 41(1).MB
- Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by impairment of neuronal functions and neuronal loss. Huntington's disease is one of the neurodegenerative diseases caused by the formation of mutant Huntingtin protein aggregates in the brain. The other pathological reasons behind this disease are oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and excitotoxicity, which lead to impairment of motor, cogn…
