  • Carcinogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from wildfires and wildland urban interface (WUI) fires pose significant health risks to firefighters. Yet, limited information is known about the specific chemical composition of smoke exposure which is needed to develop targeted cancer prevention protocols. Critically, current methods to monitor firefighters' exposure to these hazardous VOCs are la…
  • The Impact of Heat and Bushfire Smoke on Health System Utilisation in Australia. [Journal Article]
    Med J Aust. 2026 Aug; 224(8):e70261.Yoon HJ, Boyle J, … Jayasena RMJ
  • CONCLUSIONS: Heat was strongly associated with acute ED presentations, while particulate matter was strongly associated with hospital admissions and medication use. Mental health services are broadly sensitive to both exposures. These findings emphasise the need for integrated air quality management and heat-health polices to reduce system-wide health burdens.
  • Predicting Coral Cover Trends From Local to Broad Spatial Scales. [Journal Article]

  • Modern biodiversity monitoring programs are designed to provide rapid assessments of trends in the abundance and distribution of keystone taxa and timely scientific insights for decision-making. An important consideration when delivering this information to stakeholders is the quantification of uncertainty, which determines the robustness of detecting changes across habitats and regions. In coral…
