- miR-17: from developmental regulatory hub to molecular engine driving tumourigenesis. [Review]Front Oncol. 2026; 16:1787691.FO
- MicroRNA-17(miR-17) is a prototypical oncogenic miRNA that plays a central driving role in the initiation and progression of various malignant tumours (MT), including lymphoma, lung cancer, colorectal cancer (CRC), and breast cancer (BC). It inhibits the activation of apoptosis pathways and promotes the G1/S phase transition by targeting tumor suppressor genes and cell cycle regulators, thereby d…

- Dynamic circulation and strain diversity of Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae in a low-biosecurity sheep flock. [Journal Article]Vet Microbiol. 2026 Aug; 319:111080.VM
- Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae is an important respiratory pathogen in sheep, commonly implicated in chronic pneumonia. Although widely reported, data on its occurrence, strain diversity and the relationship between upper respiratory tract carriage and pulmonary infection remains limited. The study examined a conventional flock of 230 Merino x Berrichon du Cher ewes. Thirty-eight sheep underwent physic…

- Updated trends in the global prevalence and burden of mental disorders, 1990-2023: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023. [Systematic Review]Lancet. 2026 May 23; 407(10543):2040-2064.Lct
- CONCLUSIONS: A significant health burden was imposed by mental disorders in all countries and territories in 2023, irrespective of the health resources available. In some instances, this burden has increased over time and is unevenly distributed across populations. Stronger surveillance systems, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries, are required. Additionally, we need more coordinated and inclusive policies to reduce the burden through early treatment and prevention, tailored to sex and age differences across locations. Responding to the mental health needs of our global population, especially those most vulnerable, is an obligation, not a choice.

- An Integrative Framework Identifies Cooperative Targeting of Host Pathways by Tick Salivary miRNAs. [Journal Article]Comput Struct Biotechnol J. 2026; 35(1):0106.CS
- Ticks are ectoparasites that modulate host responses to sustain prolonged blood feeding, and in Ixodes ricinus, salivary microRNAs (miRNAs) represent promising candidates for manipulating host gene expression. Using phylogenetic footprinting combined with cooperative targeting analysis, we predicted deeply conserved miRNA-mRNA interactions that appear to contribute to tick lifecycle completion an…

- Clinical profile, imaging characteristics, and operative outcomes of pediatric cystic echinococcosis in Northern Jordan: a single-center retrospective study. [Journal Article]Front Surg. 2026; 13:1779069.FS
- CONCLUSIONS: Open deroofing plus albendazole in Northern Jordanian children was associated with low recurrence and acceptable morbidity. Expanded ultrasound screening, community zoonosis education, and WHO-aligned protocols are needed.

- Cysteine cathepsin proteases in apicomplexan parasites. [Review]Biol Chem. 2026 May 07. [Online ahead of print]BC
- Cysteine cathepsins are papain-like proteases which play key roles in a large range of organisms, including apicomplexan parasites. These obligate endoparasites are responsible for many devastating diseases in human and/or animal hosts, for which available treatments are limited or face the emergence of resistance. This review presents the cysteine cathepsins expressed by five major Apicomplexa (…

- Predictors of Concomitant Pulmonary Involvement in Hepatic Cystic Echinococcosis: A Clinical Risk Stratification Model. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: In hepatic CE, concomitant pulmonary involvement at baseline was strongly associated with cyst activity and showed a structured but non-independent relationship with segmental topography. The HepatoMAP score showed promising rule-out characteristics in this cohort and may support more selective use of thoracic imaging. Prospective external validation is required before routine clinical implementation.

- How the Gender Dimension of One Health Helps Combat Outbreaks of Emerging and Reemerging Zoonotic Diseases: Case Studies. [Journal Article]Health Secur. 2026 Apr; 24(2):129-139.HS
- When outbreaks of emerging and reemerging zoonotic diseases are discussed, little attention is paid to differential gender impacts, or to gender involvement and roles in different settings during the outbreak. Gender roles shape how individuals' interactions with animals, wildlife, other people and the environment, which influences exposure to zoonotic pathogens. For example, in some rural commun…

- Beyond Eosinophilia: A Multisystem, Non-eosinophilic Löffler-Like Pulmonary Syndrome From Household Helminthic Transmission. [Case Reports]Cureus. 2026 Mar; 18(3):e105989.C
- Löffler's syndrome is classically described as a transient pulmonary disorder associated with eosinophilic infiltration of the lungs, most commonly triggered by helminthic larval migration. While eosinophilia is considered a defining feature, rare cases lacking peripheral or pulmonary eosinophilia have been reported, complicating recognition and diagnosis. Disseminated helminthic infection with m…

- Not a Fluke: Pulmonary Manifestations of Parasitic Infection. [Journal Article]J Thorac Imaging. 2026 Apr 21. [Online ahead of print]JT
- Parasitic infections affect approximately two billion people globally, most commonly in developing countries in the tropics and subtropical regions. However, they are being seen in developed countries with increasing frequency due to immigration and travel. Many parasitic infections present with nonspecific and overlapping clinical findings, and many present with chest involvement. Thoracic manif…

- The harbor porpoise populations of the North and Baltic Seas are highly impacted by human activities, including underwater-radiated noise, fisheries and pollution. These cumulative stressors can have various detrimental effects, such as reduced foraging success, altered behavior and an impaired immune system. Harbor porpoises especially suffer from diseases of the respiratory tract which are part…
