  • The Infectious Clue: Linking Bacterial Infections to Underlying Malignancies. [Review]
    Cancers (Basel). 2025 Dec 11; 17(24).Močibob L, Gjurašin B, Papić NC
  • Emerging evidence suggests some bacterial infections may be early signs of hidden cancers rather than random events. Yet this link remains under-recognized in practice, representing an often-missed diagnostic opportunity. Large registry studies show that certain infections are linked to a sharply increased short-term risk of cancer detection, with most of the excess diagnoses clustering in the fi…
  • Streptococcus anginosus Group of Bacteria as an Underappreciated Cause of Pneumonia. [Journal Article]

  • CONCLUSIONS: Community-acquired SAG empyema is a complication of unrecognized SAG pneumonia. S intermedius was the most common species to cause SAG empyema and pneumonia in this small series. The pneumonias were subacute and misdiagnosed as "adjacent atelectasis." Some cases of pSAG empyema were a complication of mediastinitis in patients with malignancies. Measurement of HUs in consolidations adjacent to empyema is useful for establishing the diagnosis of pneumonia in patients who present with what appears to be primary SAG empyema. In terms of limitations, this is a retrospective analysis, and not all patients with SAG empyema had contrast-enhanced CT scans. Furthermore, none of the pSAG cases were reanalyzed to measure HUs in the consolidated lungs. We also did not use molecular methods to speciate SAG isolates or detect fastidious anaerobes in the empyema fluids, although all the exudates were cultured anaerobically on multiple media for at least 5 days.
  • Aetiology of Adult Community-Acquired Lung Abscess in Hong Kong. [Journal Article]

  • CONCLUSIONS: Anaerobes and aerobic streptococci appear to be the major pathogens for primary CALA. Secondary lung abscess caused by haematogenous spread is commonly attributable to Staphylococcus aureus or Klebsiella pneumoniae . Choice of empiric antibiotics should take these into consideration together with local patterns of antibiotic resistance.
  • Lung abscess caused by the anaerobic pathogen Tannerella forsythia. [Case Reports]
    Respirol Case Rep. 2024 Jun; 12(6):e01391.Miao X, Yang W, … Chen TRC
  • Odontogenic infections can spread to the respiratory tract. Despite the known role of Tannerella forsythia as the primary pathogen in periodontitis, the association between T. forsythia infection and risk of pneumonia or lung abscess remains unknown. In this report, we present a case of lung abscess caused by T. forsythia infection. The pathogen was detected by metagenomic next-generation sequenc…
  • Veillonella Intrapulmonary Abscess With Empyema. [Case Reports]
Cureus. 2023 Sep; 15(9):e45210.Martinez K, Mangat GK, … Silver Md MC
  • A lung abscess is characterized as a clinical ailment arising from the localized suppurative necrosis of lung parenchyma. This condition primarily results from the complications of aspiration pneumonia due to anaerobic microorganisms originating from the oral cavity. Clinically, patients typically manifest symptoms such as fever, malaise, and a productive cough persisting over several weeks. The …
  • Lung Abscess Case Series and Review of the Literature. [Case Reports]
    Children (Basel). 2022 Jul 14; 9(7).Yousef L, Yousef A, Al-Shamrani AC
  • (1) Background: Lung abscess is a lung infection that leads to the destruction of the lung parenchyma, resulting in a cavity formation and central necrosis filled with purulent fluids. It is an uncommon pediatric problem, and there is a paucity of literature reviews on this subject, especially for the pediatric age group. Lung abscess is commonly divided into those considered primary in previousl…
