- Clinical course of a patient with PRSS56-associated nanophthalmos (isolated microphthalmia) and uveal effusion syndrome. [Journal Article]Doc Ophthalmol. 2026 Jun 19. [Online ahead of print]DO
- CONCLUSIONS: This report describes a patient with an unreported pathogenic PRSS56 variant who exhibited a typical and severe course of nanophthalmos (isolated microphthalmia) complicated by bilateral UES. Although the effusions eventually resolved after multiple interventions, the prolonged UES was challenging to manage and resulted in irreversible retinal dysfunction with a non-recordable ERG.

- A female toddler clinically diagnosed with hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) was referred by the treating paediatrician, with acute-onset painless diminution of vision for 3 days. She had papulomacular skin rashes and was unable to follow the light stimulus at presentation. On fundus evaluation, bilateral asymmetrical (left eye more severe than the right eye) multifocal full-thickness necrotisi…

- Redox imbalance dictates dependence on GOT1 versus GOT2 for rod photoreceptor health during aging and stress. [Journal Article]Redox Biol. 2026 Jun 18; 95:104266. [Online ahead of print]RB
- Photoreceptor (PR) loss causes vision loss in many blinding diseases and effective therapies to prevent this cell loss are lacking. Aspartate aminotransferases (GOTs), located in the cytosol (GOT1) and mitochondria (GOT2), are key components of the malate-aspartate shuttle, which transfers reducing equivalents from cytosol to mitochondria. Previous work has implicated the GOTs as potential modula…

- Changes in corneal astigmatism, axial length and anterior chamber depth after vitrectomy and phacovitrectomy in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. [Journal Article]Int Ophthalmol. 2026 Jun 19; 46(1).IO
- CONCLUSIONS: Vitrectomy alone does not affect anterior or posterior corneal astigmatism. Following vitrectomy, the AL increases, while the ACD decreases transiently. When vitrectomy is combined with phacoemulsification for cataract removal, the anterior and posterior corneal astigmatism increases transiently, while AL and ACD are enlarged for several months following surgery.

- Predicting the progression of proliferative diabetic retinopathy: Pathophysiology, imaging phenotypes, and determinants of disease persistence despite therapy. [Review]Surv Ophthalmol. 2026 Jun 18. [Online ahead of print]SO
- Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) is a leading cause of severe visual loss in working-age adults and represents the end stage of chronic neurovascular injury in diabetes. Despite advances in screening and treatment, including panretinal photocoagulation (PRP), intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents and pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), outcomes remain heterogene…

- Exudative Retinal Detachments: A Rare Adverse Effect of Topiramate. [Journal Article]Clin Case Rep. 2026 Jun; 14(6):e72977.CC
- Topiramate-induced multifocal exudative retinal detachment is a rare but potentially vision-threatening adverse effect. We report a 59-year-old woman with idiopathic intracranial hypertension who developed painless bilateral blurry vision and color desaturation 8 days after initiation of topiramate 25 mg twice daily. Fundus examination and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography demonstrated…

- From Field to Fundus: A Peripheral Retinal Tear Following Football-Related Ocular Trauma. [Case Reports]Cureus. 2026 May; 18(5):e109005.C
- Sports-related ocular trauma is an important cause of preventable visual morbidity, particularly in contact sports such as football (soccer). Although many injuries initially present with mild anterior segment findings, significant posterior segment pathology may coexist and can be easily overlooked. We report the case of a 17-year-old male football player who presented with left eye pain, blurre…

- CONCLUSIONS: In-office laser barricade is an effective treatment for RRDs spanning ≥2 clock hours, with a 92.1% long-term success rate. Patients not requiring same-day intervention may achieve excellent outcomes with laser barricade alone.

- Full-thickness Macular Hole Formation and Spontaneous Closure Following Vitrectomy Surgery: A Case Report and Review of the Literature. [Case Reports]J Ophthalmic Vis Res. 2026; 21.JO
- CONCLUSIONS: Spontaneous MH closure is possible in post-vitrectomized eyes. Small- or medium-sized MHs ( < 400 µm) may be more likely to close spontaneously. Large MHs ( > 400 µm) that form in the setting of vitreomacular traction (VMT) from residual posterior vitreous cortex remnants were found to close after spontaneous VMT release, often within the first month following surgery. Overall, among eyes with spontaneous closure, about two-thirds of MHs in the literature closed spontaneously within the first month following diagnosis, and 4 in 5 holes closed within 3 months. Over one-third of MHs that close spontaneously reopen later, some requiring additional surgery to achieve closure. Sustained closure was seen in this report up to 7 years following closure.

- Scleral remodeling in myopia: mechanisms and therapeutic approaches. [Review]Prog Retin Eye Res. 2026 Jun 17; :101486. [Online ahead of print]PR
- High myopia is the leading cause of visual impairment worldwide, driven by excessive axial elongation resulting in biomechanical weakening of the sclera, and increasing the risk of complications such as posterior staphyloma, myopic macular degeneration, retinal detachment, cataract, and glaucoma. Conventional myopia management strategies aim to slow axial elongation in childhood, leaving patients…

- Predictors of retinal detachment and visual outcome in acute retinal necrosis: a 14-year retrospective cohort. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: In ARN, severe initial disease, characterized by panretinal necrosis and poor presenting acuity, predisposes to RD and profound vision loss. Most detachments occur within two months of onset, highlighting the need for vigilant early monitoring. Baseline visual acuity is a powerful prognostic indicator, whereas adjunctive treatments (prophylactic laser, intravitreal antivirals) did not independently improve outcomes. To our knowledge, this is the largest cohort of ARN patients reported from the Middle East and one of the few studies globally to incorporate time-to-event analysis and ROC-based visual prognostication. These findings provide region-specific data that refine global risk models for ARN. These findings can guide risk stratification and management decisions in ARN.

- Retinal vasoproliferative tumors (RVPTs) are rare, benign lesions appearing as elevated, pink masses in the peripheral retina. Initially considered acquired retinal capillary hemangioblastomas, RVPTs are now recognized as distinct entities, with idiopathic and secondary forms. Though primarily affecting individuals between 30 and 50 years of age, their pathogenesis remains under investigation.
