- Short-term treatment outcomes of the ranibizumab biosimilar CKD-701 for vitreous hemorrhage secondary to proliferative diabetic retinopathy. [Journal Article]BMC Ophthalmol. 2026 May 18. [Online ahead of print]BO
- CONCLUSIONS: In this short-term study, VH secondary to PDR decreased following CKD-701 treatment and was accompanied by visual improvement. Further well-controlled long-term studies are needed to definitively assess the efficacy of CKD-701.

- Longitudinal Multi-Omics Profiling of Aqueous Humor Implicates GALNS Depletion as a Pro-Fibrotic Mediator of Anti-VEGF Therapy in PDR. [Journal Article]Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci. 2026 May 01; 67(5):43.IO
- CONCLUSIONS: This multi-omics study, reinforced by independent validation, reveals GALNS depletion as a potential pro-fibrotic molecule following anti-VEGF therapy in PDR, offering a promising candidate for perioperative risk stratification. CAST and 3-HPA remain exploratory candidates requiring validation in larger cohorts.

- Visual Acuity Outcomes in Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Patients With Vitreous Hemorrhage Resulting From Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy Treated at a County Hospital. [Journal Article]J Vitreoretin Dis. 2026 May 15; :24741264261442932. [Online ahead of print]JV
- Purpose: To evaluate real-world visual acuity (VA) outcomes in a socioeconomically disadvantaged population of patients with vitreous hemorrhage (VH) resulting from proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) who received primary treatment with either intravitreal antivascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injections, pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), or panretinal photocoagulation (PRP). - Impact of treatment gap on visual acuity in patients with submacular hemorrhage secondary to neovascular age-related macular degeneration treated with quadruple intervention strategy. [Journal Article]Ther Adv Ophthalmol. 2026; 18:25158414261447184.TA
- CONCLUSIONS: A combination of vitrectomy, subretinal rtPA, and bevacizumab, performed in patients with submacular hemorrhage due to neovascular AMD, followed by monthly intravitreal double-dose bevacizumab for SMH, was an effective intervention to achieve visual acuity improvement.

- Outcomes and Complications of Secondary Intraocular Lens Implantation: Insights From a Vitreoretinal Surgery Cohort. [Journal Article]Ophthalmic Surg Lasers Imaging Retina. 2026 May; 57(5):310-318.OS
- CONCLUSIONS: Secondary IOL surgery performed by vitreoretinal surgeons was associated with a lower rate of intraoperative retinal breaks and postoperative RD compared to previous reports. There was a trend towards lower rates of intraoperatively identified retinal breaks in eyes with prior RD or PPV. Some IOL types were associated with higher rates of postoperative complications such as CME and vitreous hemorrhage.

- Comparison of the effectiveness of ranibizumab monotherapy vs. combined panretinal photocoagulation on the regression of neovascularization in proliferative diabetic retinopathy. [Journal Article]Front Med (Lausanne). 2026; 13:1808957.FM
- CONCLUSIONS: For PDR, ranibizumab combined with PRP was associated with greater NVD regression, reduced treatment burden, and a lower risk of sight-threatening complications compared with ranibizumab monotherapy, while visual and anatomical outcomes were comparable between the two groups.

- Peripheral retinal haemorrhage density on ultra-widefield imaging as a novel biomarker for predicting diabetic retinopathy progression: a 2-year longitudinal study in Asians. [Journal Article]Br J Ophthalmol. 2026 May 12. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Peripheral biomarkers on UWF imaging, including peripheral retinal haemorrhage density and PPLs, are independent predictors of DR progression. These findings support the clinical utility of peripheral retinal assessment and automated artificial intelligence-based imaging tools in DR risk stratification and management.

- Focused Ultrasound Treatment of Vitreous Hemorrhage in an In Vivo Rabbit Model. [Journal Article]Ophthalmol Sci. 2026 Jun; 6(6):101188.OS
- CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that cavitation-based FUS therapy accelerates VH clearance in a preclinical model when compared with natural reabsorption ("watchful waiting"). With further refinement of treatment protocol to enhance safety, these findings provide initial support for vitreosonication as a potential noninvasive treatment modality for VH.

- Comparative evaluation of three trauma scoring systems: OTS, POTS, and MPOTS for predicting early visual outcomes in pediatric open-globe injuries. [Journal Article]BMC Ophthalmol. 2026 May 07. [Online ahead of print]BO
- CONCLUSIONS: OTS, POTS, and MPOTS are valuable tools for predicting visual outcomes in pediatric OGI. While POTS demonstrated the best discriminative performance in our cohort, OTS remained highly reliable, and MPOTS provided a simpler framework but with slightly reduced accuracy. OTS should continue to serve as a reference standard, with pediatric-specific scores offering complementary value in challenging clinical scenarios.

- [Proliferative diabetic retinopathy: fewer complications with early surgery]. [Systematic Review]Rev Med Inst Mex Seguro Soc. 2026 May 06; 64(3):e6910.RM
- Legal blindness due to proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) in patients with diabetes mellitus can be preventable if detected and treated in a timely manner. Although vitrectomy has traditionally been reserved for complicated cases, advances in surgical techniques and a better understanding of pathophysiology have driven its evaluation as an early or preventive strategy in selected patients. …

- Imaging Biomarkers for Early Differentiation of Candida and Aspergillus Endogenous Fungal Endophthalmitis: Multicenter Optical Coherence Tomography-Based Analysis. [Journal Article]Am J Ophthalmol. 2026 May 03. [Online ahead of print]AJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Candida and Aspergillus EFE presenting with retinochoroiditis exhibit distinct features that allow reliable differentiation between these fungal etiologies. These OCT-based biomarkers may inform early organism-specific management while awaiting microbiological confirmation.

- Bilateral peripheral exudative hemorrhagic chorioretinopathy treated with intravitreal injections of ranibizumab. [Case Reports]Arch Soc Esp Oftalmol (Engl Ed). 2026 Apr 29; :502539. [Online ahead of print]AS
- Peripheral exudative hemorrhagic chorioretinopathy (PEHCR) is a rare entity consisting of lesions similar to those of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and type 1 aneurysmal neovascularization (N1a), but located outside the macular region in the peripheral retina. We present the case of an 89-year-old woman who presented to the emergency department with loss of visual acuity (VA) in both eye…

- Use of preoperative swept-source optical coherence tomography in vitrectomy for advanced diabetic eye disease: a pilot study. [Journal Article]Front Ophthalmol (Lausanne). 2026; 6:1688660.FO
- CONCLUSIONS: SS-OCT showed potential as an adjunct to clinical examinations, especially when hazy media opacities did not allow for a clear view of the fundus. However, it is important to recognise that OCT only serves as an adjunct and cannot be used as a definitive argument for assessing surgical feasibility.
