- Beyond Apical Ballooning: A Rare Focal Takotsubo Syndrome Variant Following Interscalene Block-Associated Airway Obstruction. [Case Reports]Cureus. 2026 Jul; 18(7):e113007.C
- Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is a transient stress-induced cardiomyopathy that typically presents with apical ballooning; focal variants are rare and may closely mimic acute coronary syndromes. We present the case of a 74-year-old woman who developed acute hypoxemic respiratory failure secondary to vocal cord and phrenic nerve paralysis following an interscalene block. During hospitalization, she exh…

- Anatomical adaptation of a custom 3D prosthesis for canine laryngeal stenosis: a preliminary cadaveric study. [Journal Article]J Vet Sci. 2026 Jul; 27(4):e45.JV
- CONCLUSIONS: This preliminary cadaveric study demonstrates that a custom canine-specific 3D laryngeal prosthesis can achieve stable anatomical integration without excessive glottic expansion or interference with epiglottic function. Although cadaveric testing cannot assess inflammatory responses, the limited dilation observed indicates low radial force. These findings support the potential of this device as a species-specific alternative to traditional surgical approaches. In vivo evaluation with medical-grade materials is warranted to confirm safety, tolerability, and long-term efficacy.

- Application of a Stepwise Treatment Protocol in the Closed-Loop Management of Unilateral Vocal Cord Paralysis Following Thyroid Surgery. [Case Reports]J Voice. 2026 Jul 27. [Online ahead of print]JV
- CONCLUSIONS: The proposed stepwise treatment protocol overcomes the limitations of monotherapy for unilateral vocal cord paralysis after thyroid surgery. By integrating standardized voice training with individualized surgical intervention, it achieves tiered treatment and closed-loop management, systematically improving patients' voice function and offering a new comprehensive closed-loop management strategy for this patient population.

- Multidisciplinary Management of Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Injury After Transhiatal Esophagectomy. [Journal Article]Am Surg. 2026 Jul 24; :31348261471503. [Online ahead of print]AS
- Recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury is a significant morbidity following transhiatal esophagectomy (THE). While surgical platforms have evolved, the clinical burden and longitudinal management of these injuries remain under-characterized. This study evaluates RLN injury incidence and the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary management pathway in a contemporary cohort. A retrospective review of…

- Vagal Schwannoma Mimicking a Parotid Tumor: A Case Report. [Journal Article]Ear Nose Throat J. 2026 Jul 18; :1455613261471275. [Online ahead of print]EN
- Vagal schwannoma is a rare benign tumor of the head and neck, originating from Schwann cells of peripheral nerves. These tumors are typically slow-growing and often present with nonspecific clinical features. The most common manifestation is a gradually enlarging neck mass; therefore, preoperative diagnosis is quite challenging, and such lesions are frequently misdiagnosed as parotid tumors, para…

- Vocal cord immobility in Guillain-Barré syndrome: a diagnostic challenge. [Case Reports]BMJ Case Rep. 2026 Jul 17; 19(7).BC
- We present the case of a man in his 40s with Miller Fisher/Guillain-Barré overlap syndrome complicated by bilateral vocal cord (BVC) paralysis and respiratory failure. MRI, nerve conduction studies confirming motor-predominant axonal loss, and positive anti-GD1b and GM1 antibodies supported the diagnosis. Emergency intubation and tracheostomy for ventilatory weaning was required. Persistent BVC i…

- Adjustable Vocal Implant System (VOIS) for Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis: Short-Term Outcomes From a 12-Patient Case Series. [Journal Article]Clin Otolaryngol. 2026 Jul 16. [Online ahead of print]CO
- CONCLUSIONS: The VOIS implant thyroplasty demonstrated significant improvement in both perceptual and patient-reported voice outcomes with a favourable safety profile. Larger, long-term studies are warranted to confirm its comparative efficacy and durability.

- Frequency and determinants of reintubation following pediatric cardiac surgery. [Journal Article]Turk Gogus Kalp Damar Cerrahisi Derg. 2026 Jul 16. [Online ahead of print]TG
- CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of reintubation after pediatric cardiac surgery remains relatively high, with multifactorial underlying causes. The identification of these potential risk factors may facilitate the detection of high-risk patients following cardiac surgery and contribute to improved clinical outcomes by ensuring a more cautious approach to extubation in these groups.

- Non-invasive vagus nerve magnetic stimulation combined with rehabilitation training for vocal cord paralysis and dysphagia following brain injury: a prospective case series study. [Journal Article]Front Neurol. 2026; 17:1807577.FN
- CONCLUSIONS: As a preliminary case series without a control group, nVNMS combined with rehabilitation training may improve swallowing safety and vocal cord function and reduce airway management requirements in patients following brain injury, with favorable short-term safety. Owing to the lack of a control group, the specific effect of nVNMS and the impact of natural recovery cannot be differentiated; thus, multicenter randomized controlled trials are required for further validation.

- Case Report: Early diaphragmatic plication for combined phrenic and recurrent laryngeal nerve injury after VATS thymectomy. [Case Reports]Front Med (Lausanne). 2026; 13:1834703.FM
- Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) thymectomy may cause phrenic nerve injury (PNI) or recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury. Combined PNI and RLN injury is rare but can cause fatal respiratory failure. This study reported a case of VATS thymectomy in a 50-year-old man. The patient received a VATS thymectomy at an external hospital and presented to our hospital 10 days later with severe …

- When voice fades, images speak; imaging diagnosis of recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy on FDG PET-CT. [Case Reports]J Pak Med Assoc. 2026 Jul; 76(7):1185-1186.JP
- Vocal cord palsy may reveal underlying sinister pathology. Unilateral vocal cord palsy can be detected incidentally on FDG PET-CT scan performed for oncologic evaluation. There may be asymmetrically increased FDG uptake in the contralateral vocal cord due to compensatory hyperactivity and hypertrophy, along with dilatation of the affected laryngeal ventricle, consistent with vocal cord paralysis.…

He was under investigation for asymmetrical muscle weakness in the absence of a sensory deficit for the preceding 1 year. Spirometry (flow volume loop) suggested extra-thoracic restriction and bronchoscopy confirmed bilateral vocal cord palsy. Due to clinical presentation and a positive anti-…
