- Clinical and pathological findings in two Italian siblings of Romani ancestry with charcot-marie-tooth type 4D and review of the current literature. [Journal Article]J Neuromuscul Dis. 2026 May 06; :22143602261438536. [Online ahead of print]JN
- Charcot-Marie-tooth disease type 4D (CMT4D) is an early-onset, severe autosomal recessive demyelinating neuropathy, caused by mutations in the N-myc downstream-regulated gene 1 (NDRG1). Because of its rarity and predominance among specific ethnic groups, clinical knowledge remains limited. We report the case of two siblings of Romani ancestry, a 38-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman, with homoz…

- Electroacupuncture-Based Cerebral Electric Field Therapy for Unilateral Vocal Cord Paralysis with Secondary Dysphagia Post Upper Respiratory Infection. [Case Reports]J Vis Exp. 2026 Apr 17; (230).JV
- Unilateral vocal fold paralysis secondary to peripheral nerve injury presents limited treatment options and inconsistent outcomes. This protocol describes an electroacupuncture-based cerebral electric field therapy designed to target neuroanatomically relevant pathways through combined scalp, posterior cervical, and anterior neck electroacupuncture. The procedure includes standardized point selec…

- Long-Term Outcomes of Patients Undergoing Cricothyrotomy at a Tertiary Care Level One Trauma Center. [Journal Article]Laryngoscope. 2026 Apr 29. [Online ahead of print]L
- CONCLUSIONS: Cricothyrotomy remains a vital, life-saving intervention in the difficult airway algorithm but carries a risk of significant post-procedural complications, including dysphagia, pneumonia, dysphonia, subglottic stenosis, and vocal fold injury. These findings highlight the importance of meticulous postoperative care, particularly respiratory management, to reduce delays in conversion to tracheostomy and optimize long-term outcomes.

- Flexible Laryngoscopy Findings in Patients Undergoing Thyroidectomy in North-Central Nigeria. [Journal Article]J West Afr Coll Surg. 2026; 16(2):113-118.JW
- CONCLUSIONS: This study showed VCP's prevalence to be 6.1% and 9.8% for incidental LPPs in patients with goitre undergoing thyroidectomy. LPRD was the most commonly identified pathology.

- Postoperative recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis in thyroid carcinoma surgery. [Journal Article]Am J Otolaryngol. 2026 Apr 24; 47(3):104849. [Online ahead of print]AJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Patients with suspected tracheal invasion preoperatively are at high risk of requiring intraoperative RLN resection. Among the patients with thyroid carcinoma who preserved RLN during surgery, the cases in which nerve preservation was achieved by shaving technique and those with greater intraoperative bleeding had a higher risk of postoperative RLN paralysis.

- Continuous Intraoperative Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Monitoring in Transcervical Inflatable Mediastinoscopic Esophagectomy. [Case Reports]Thorac Cancer. 2026 Apr; 17(8):e70266.TC
- Transcervical inflatable mediastinoscopic esophagectomy (TIME), with fewer incisions and without going through the thoracic cavity, may achieve the same results and lymph node dissection compared with Thoracoscopic assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy (TAMIE). However, its small visual field increases recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury risk. Intraoperative nerve monitoring (IONM) reduces…

- Postoperative esophageal achalasia after repair of aortic coarctation synchronized with bilateral subclavian artery aneurysm: case report. [Journal Article]J Cardiothorac Surg. 2026 Apr 14. [Online ahead of print]JC
- CONCLUSIONS: This is the first reported case linking aortic coarctation repair with the subsequent development of achalasia, likely due to intraoperative vagus nerve injury. It highlights the importance of meticulous nerve preservation during aortic arch surgery and considering neurological causes of dysphagia in post-surgical patients.

- Evaluation of Vocal Cord Paralysis Following Lung Transplantation. [Journal Article]Laryngoscope Investig Otolaryngol. 2026 Apr; 11(2):e70408.LI
- CONCLUSIONS: Vocal cord pathologies, including VCP, frequently occur in patients post-lung transplantation. It is vital for the transplant team and laryngologists to monitor and help institute appropriate care and follow-up for these patients.

- Posterior Arytenoid Cartilage Dislocation Despite Optimal Intubation During Prolonged Steep Trendelenburg Robotic Prostatectomy: A Potential Biomechanical Contributor. [Journal Article]J Clin Med. 2026 Mar 31; 15(7).JC
- Background: Arytenoid cartilage dislocation (ACD) is a rare but clinically significant complication of endotracheal intubation that may be misdiagnosed as transient vocal cord paralysis. The potential role of prolonged surgical positioning in ACD remains underrecognized. Methods: A 63-year-old male developed left posterior ACD following robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) performed in a s…

- PYROXD1-related myopathy is a rare genetic disorder with variable age of onset, ranging from the neonatal period to late adulthood. We report a male infant presenting with congenital hypotonia, progressive severe weakness, respiratory insufficiency, stridor, and ophthalmoplegia. Muscle biopsy revealed fibre size variation, internalized nuclei, and myofibrillary changes with sarcoplasmic disorgani…

- Postoperative Tapia syndrome after lumbar posterior lumbar interbody fusion: a case report. [Case Reports]Front Med (Lausanne). 2026; 13:1802688.FM
- Tapia syndrome is a rare complication characterized by concomitant injury to the hypoglossal and vagus nerves, most commonly associated with airway procedures during general anesthesia. Its incidence is extremely low. Literature review reveals that most reported cases involve Tapia syndrome following posterior cervical spine surgery, with no documented cases of Tapia syndrome occurring after open…

- The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into surgical navigation represents a pivotal advancement in modern operative medicine. In endoscopic thyroidectomy, safeguarding the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) is of critical importance due to its vulnerability to iatrogenic injury, which affects 3-8% of cases and can lead to serious complications such as vocal cord paralysis. However, existin…
