Optimizing Patient Communications

Effective communication is the cornerstone of the patient-physician relationship and is necessary for providing comprehensive, safe, high-quality care. Its impact on patient satisfaction, adherence, and ultimately health outcomes cannot be overstated. In most areas of medicine, the patient-physician relationship grows over time and with multiple encounters. OB/GYN hospitalists, however, have the unique challenge and opportunity to establish a rapport with patients in a very short time, often in the setting of an urgent or emergent evaluation. With knowledge of the essential components of effective communication and the skills to apply that knowledge to practice, hospitalists can earn trust and achieve meaningful and mutually satisfying patient-physician relationships.
