Genitourinary Disorders in Pregnancy

Urinary tract illnesses are common complications of pregnancy with potentially serious adverse maternal and fetal consequences. Pregnancy-induced structural and functional changes within the urinary tract predispose pregnant women to a greater risk of progression of asymptomatic bacteriuria to pyelonephritis (40%) with associated risk of preterm birth and low birth weight.[1] Acute urolithiasis accounts for the highest number of non-obstetric hospital admissions during pregnancy.[2] OB/GYN hospitalists can provide appropriate screening for these conditions and other urinary tract disorders with cost-effective selection of diagnostic studies and timely initiation of evidence-based management.
