Collaboration with Prenatal Providers
Through early and regular prenatal care, women develop a rapport and trust with their prenatal providers, which is important to patient care and the patient experience. The hospitalist paradigm, while it enhances safety and quality of care in many ways, introduces challenges inherent to the scenario of a new physician entering the patient-physician relationship at a critical time when a patient presents to the hospital. Patients may have difficulty accepting recommendations from a provider they do not know, and OB/GYN hospitalists may find it challenging to navigate relationships with multiple providers involved in patient care. Additionally, most adverse outcomes in medicine result from lack of team function, particularly breakdown in communication.[1] To optimize the patient experience and clinical outcomes, a collaborative, team-based approach to care and effective communication skills are essential attributes for OB/GYN hospitalists.
