Obstetric Triage Emergency Department

Care of the pregnant or postpartum woman often begins in the obstetric emergency department (OBED) or the triage unit in labor and delivery. Appropriate care requires timely assessment and determination of acuity. OB/GYN hospitalists must respond to urgent medical conditions and deploy rapid interventions. Differentiation of normal versus pathologic conditions requires patient evaluation, diagnostic testing, imaging, and appropriate therapeutic interventions. OB/GYN hospitalists working in triage/OBED may need to coordinate and activate multiple team members and specialists for situations, including gynecologic emergencies and high-acuity obstetric emergencies in the main emergency department. OB/GYN hospitalists have a critical role in the treatment and care of patients in triage/OBED, as well as in the standardization of care and improvement of safety for all obstetric patients.[1]
