Levels of Maternal Care

The safe provision of maternity care requires a thorough understanding of the capabilities and limitations that each hospital possesses. Specific levels of maternity care have been proposed by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists/Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine to help provide risk-appropriate care and decrease both maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.[1] OB/GYN hospitalists must understand the different levels of care available throughout the region in which they practice, assess each patient’s individual risk, and determine the appropriate level of care for that patient. OB/GYN hospitalists are uniquely positioned to effectively communicate within their network and to facilitate safe patient transfers within the region in which they work.
