Professionalism and Ethics

Medical ethics addresses issues that arise in caring for patients at the personal, institutional, and societal level. The fiduciary responsibility of providers to honor patients’ rights and to “first do no harm” are core principles. OB/GYN hospitalists are particularly challenged by the need to consider 2 patients—the mother and fetus—and conflicts that arise therefrom.[1] OB/GYN hospitalists must have knowledge of ethical principles and commit to providing balanced care that navigates potential ethical dilemmas in a patient-centered manner.
