Unbound
Medicine’s Gateway Adopted by
Five Leading
Medical Institutions
Unbound Central Links
Libraries to Users through
PDA, Wireless Devices,
and the Web
Charlottesville, VA, May
13, 2005 -- Unbound
Medicine, a leading provider of information resources for
healthcare providers, announced today that its gateway product,
Unbound Central, has been adopted by five leading medical
institutions. Through Unbound Central the University of Pennsylvania,
New York University, MedStar Health, University
of Muenster, and University of Washington will connect directly
to their users’ Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs),
wireless devices, and the Web.
Working with Unbound Medicine,
the five libraries have developed institutionally
branded gateways to deliver local news, journal alerts,
and MEDLINE literature searching to patrons’ handheld
or wireless devices. The libraries are meeting patron
content needs by selecting from Unbound Central’s
leading disease, drug, test, and procedure titles
from publishing partners such as McGraw-Hill, Lippincott
Williams & Wilkins, F.A. Davis, and the BMJ Publishing
Group.
“Our students and
clinicians have been asking us what resources are
available for their PDAs and for wireless devices
such as Treo, Smartphone, or Blackberry,” said
Valerie Peña, Director of the Health Science Libraries
at the University of Pennsylvania. “With Unbound
Central we can extend the library’s reach and
provide an integrated mobile information solution
to our patrons.”
“The ability to open
new communication channels and provide practical,
clinical resources to our mobile users was the major
reason for choosing Unbound Central,” said
Karen Brewer, Library Director of the Ehrman Medical
Library at New York University. “We like the
fact that clinicians and students, who daily move
among three hospitals, benefit by being able to access
and manage knowledge on the device of their choice
from virtually any location.”
“Unbound Medicine’s
goal is to facilitate the delivery of high quality
content in medicine, nursing, and the health professions,” said
William Detmer, MD, president and CEO of Unbound
Medicine. “Medical librarians understand the
evolving needs of this group and we are happy to
partner with them to build flexible and innovative
ways to serve healthcare students and professionals.”
